There are strict laws in every country of the world to prohibit the
production and consumption of narcotics. There are drug control
bureaus to keep an eye on the sale and purchase of narcotics. But the
reality is that far from banning such substances, their consumption and
business are increasing day by day. It is a matter of concern that now
the Internet is being used indiscriminately for the purchase and sale of
drugs. The Vienna-based International Narcotics Control Bureau (INCB)
in its last year's annual report said that India and South Asia are
witnessing massive drug smuggling through internet-operated shops
selling illegal goods, ie 'darknet'.

Social media is also being used in this. These shops also circulate
material to glorify such substances. It has been said in the report that
these substances are also sold in the form of medicine. INCB has also
issued a list of some such shops by identifying them. This is a scary fact.
But it is surprising that why no practical steps have been taken so far to
ban such shops.

Drugs have made such an inroads in our country that many youth are
falling prey to their addiction, ruining their health or getting caught in
the cheeks of untimely times. The horrific pictures of the ill effects of
drugs in Punjab are not hidden from anyone. Now the consumption of
such intoxicants is becoming a fashion in the gatherings of the rich and
the elite.

Rather, in many places, secret feasts are given especially for the
consumption of such substances. The Narcotics Bureau sometimes
expresses its strictness on the drug business by arresting some people,
but the reality is that it does not have access to the main source of this
business. As a result of this, drug dealers are now seen so fearlessly that
hundreds of kilograms of narcotic substances are ordered from other
countries. This is evidenced by the huge quantity of narcotics seized in
one port of Gujarat and in many other places.

The needle of suspicion on the police and the Narcotics Department

has been stuck repeatedly because in many cases people of these
departments themselves have been found involved. A few years back, a
DSP-rank officer from Punjab was found guilty of selling narcotics in
the form of drug packs.

Drug trade is a matter of concern because it is not only ruining the lives
of the youth, but is also affecting the economy of the country badly.
But the governments have so far proved unsuccessful in cracking down
on this business. This requires strong political will. But the way a
politician was arrested for being involved in this business in Punjab, it
indicates that the roots of this business are also taking fertilizer and
water from politics. It is beyond comprehension that when sites serving
objectionable content can be shut down, then what can be the
hindrance in shutting down websites of drug dealing.
