Course Task 2
Study Questions:
1. What age-related changes can you identify in your parents/ grandparents?
- My grandfather is 70 years old which is classified as young old. Below are the age-
related changes that I observe to my grandfather.
Biological Related Aging:
- Gray Hair
- Wrinkles
- Dry Skin
- Rough skin texture
- Poor eyesight
- Poor hearing
- Already have different medication as he already experiences different illness
Psychological Aging
- Sometimes, I observe that he keeps telling me the same thing or story whenever he
visits us. He already tends to forgot some things.
- He’s good in handling his emotions

2. Discuss risks and nursing considerations associated with age-related changes.


Risks:
1. Moving in bed can injure fragile skin
2. Due to osteoporosis, fractures may result from very minor trauma
3. Heightened sensitivity to the effects of drugs and the number of drugs received,
place elders Material Protected by Copyright at risk for potentially serious effects of
polypharmacy
4. IV starts and blood draws are often difficult due to small and fragile veins
5. Fluid balance is more delicate with elderly persons
Nursing Considerations / Interventions:
1. Carefully assess and validate the need for modified communication techniques
2. Ask the patient how he or she prefers to be addressed
3. Speak slowly and at an adequate volume as needed to ensure effective
communication
4. Assisting with activities of daily living as needed
5. Use a valid and reliable measure of fall risk assessment
