Final Innovative Learning Plan (Unit 6)

In the prompts below, if your responses are the same from Unit 4 (above),
please copy and paste the same text.

1-2 sentences describing the learning experience

Participants will participate in a team film session in what we call a

pre-scout of our opponent regarding team tactics while using a video
software called Instat. Instat will be used to break down clips of
specific sequences such as forecheck, neutral zone, defensive zone as
well as special teams. We will use both illustration tools from Instat in
addition to using a team whiteboard to demonstrate opponent
tendencies in the above situations as well as our team tactical
strategies to achieve success in an upcoming game against our
opponent. Players will actively engage in conversation while
participating in the pre-scout.

Who are your learners? What do we need to know about them,

generally?

The learners will be athletes ages 16-21 who play junior hockey for the
Kenai River Brown Bears in the North American Hockey League. The
North American Hockey League is the only USA Hockey sanctioned tier
2 league in the United States. Players on the team are from all around
the world predominantly from the United States but also include a
player from Japan, two from Sweden and one from Canada. Players
are playing for Kenai River Brown Bears to either advance to the USHL
(United States Hockey League) which is tier 1 league and/or advance
to college. Some players already have division one scholarships while
the others are seeking to receive them. The team has currently two
regular season games remaining out of their sixty game season but
have already clinched a playoff spot in the Robertson Cup playoffs
which begin April 20th.

What are your learning goals for your learners?

The learning goals are for our players to understand tactically how to
execute our game plan to have the most success during the game.
Players will have two offensive zone forecheck (1-2-2 and 2-1-2
strong), one neutral zone forecheck (1-2-2) and a defensive system
(wingers on D (man on man) and then three down low in rotation).

What is your innovative technology?

Instat

How does the technology support the learning objectives?

Learners will be able to watch clips of specific sequences such as

forecheck, neutral zone, defensive zone as well as special teams. This
technology will allow us to display only the specific clips that are
meant for teaching and learning versus our players having to watch
our sift through the entire game from our opponents. In addition, we
are able to draw on the video clip and break down specific adjustments
we can make which allows illustration to reinforce what we are not
only having our players watch but also talk about. Visual learning in
hockey is the best tool for our players to understand the learning
objectives.

What will happen in your learning experience?

● Coach will breakdown specific film clips to not exceed a total of

ten clips as this has been tracked in the NHL as film sessions
need to be kept short
● From there, players will attend the team pre-scout film session
where the coach will display and discuss each clip. Coach will ask
for player input, questions and understanding of each clip
● Players will then apply these items during practice while the
coach facilitates drills to help practice the tactical plan
● Players will then attempt to execute the tactical plan during a
game

How will learners engage with each other or the outside world in
this learning experience?

During this learning experience, our players will engage with one
another during the pre-scout film session in order to highlight what
they are noticing, confirming understanding of the tactical plan, in
addition to asking questions. From there, they will work with one
another during practice sessions following the pre-scout film session in
order to practice executing the tactical game plan in preparation for
the game. Finally, players will engage with one another during the
game while using what they initially discovered during the pre-scout
film session which hopefully generates success on the ice. Of course
like anything adjustments may need to be made.

Your plan for assessing learning in this learning experience.

Players will be assessed with verbal confirmation initially during the

pre-scout film session. In addition, players will be given as a part of
their team playbook for the season blank scout sheets to diagram both
offensive and neutral zone forechecks, as well as defensive zone
tactics. On top of the tactical systems, players will have the ability to
go over our faceoff plays within their team playbook. From there,
during practice sessions we will work on all items discussed tactically
in the film session. We will gauge players' level of execution to identify
where we need to reteach, reinforce in addition to helping the coaching
staff identify who we feel should be in the lineup for the game.
