INTRODUCTION

Worldwide, 24 million
people, or 1 in 300 persons (0.32
percent), are thought to be
affected by schizophrenia. Among
adults, this prevalence is 1 in 222,
or 0.45 percent. Schizophrenia is

others. Though schizophrenia isn’t as common as other major mental illnesses, it can
be the most chronic and disabling.

Onset is most often during late

adolescence and the twenties, and onset
tends to happen earlier among men than
among women. Schizophrenia is
frequently associated with significant
distress and impairment in personal,
family, social, educational, occupational,
and other important areas of life. People
with schizophrenia often experience
human rights violations both inside mental
health institutions and in community
settings. In the Philippines 3.6 million
Filipinos suffer from at least one kind of mental, neurological, or substance use disorder.
154 million Filipinos suffer from depression, 1 million from schizophrenia, and 15.3
million from substance use disorders, while 877,000 die due to suicide every year
(Department of Health, 2018). According to Maravilla & Tan 2022, Families must be
listeners and comforters of the mentally ill, not castigators.

Filipinos must also understand that there is a complex process in managing

mental health issues and full recovery could not be achieved over a short period of time.
Thus, this study will help spread knowledge and awareness of how to prevent,
recognize, and comprehend more mental illness. This provides helpful information for
people with schizophrenia, which is believed to be significant.
