The student will learn about Jamestown and are going to demonstrate their knowledge about
Jamestown was the establishment of the first permanent English settlement in America by

geography of the settlement was important. The students will learn through reading,

STAGE 3 – LEARNING PLAN


Summary of Learning Activities:

1. Hook: Show a picture of Jamestown, and ask the students what they see, think, and wonder about the
picture.
2. Introduce: VDOE VS3. A, B, C. (have the student know and understand what they are learning in
the unit.
3. Establish the goals for the unit and what the students need to get out of the unit and things they
might want to learn more about.
4. Identify the different terms: Jamestown, charter, settlers, etc.
5. Introduce VDOE VS3. a.
6. TTW show students Jamestown Virginia and how it looked before colonization.
7. Popcorn read: the students will take turns reading and then calling on someone else after reading a
section or two. The reading will help explain the reasons for English colonization, and then have
discussion about what the students read.
8. Discuss how the trip was funded and why Jamestown was chosen as the location to settle.
9. Exit ticket: 3, 2, and 1(3 things learned, 2 interesting facts, 1 question). Have the students write
down three things they learn, 2 facts they found interesting, and one question they have.
10. KWL: What a student knows, wants to learn, and what a student learned.

13. Write in journal while looking at the map of where Jamestown is located, and answer where would
you choose to settle if you were coming to America as a settler and why?

15. Show pictures of the first settlers in Jamestown and ask how the people who settled Jamestown lived
differently than today.
16. Study and discuss geography and how important it was by looking over the maps of the Jamestown
and Virginia. The maps will show the location of important landmarks, water ways, and where any
Native Americas lived at the time. The students will be able to look over and student the map(s) to
see why it was important to settle where Jamestown was located.

a. What were some of the hardships that the Jamestown settlers faced, and are there simular
hardships in America today?
b. What is the significance of the Virginia Company of London and are there simular companies
today?
26. Play Kahoot for an overview of the lesson. Make it a review game for the students to earn points.
Those with the most points might get some extra credit on the test or have candy as a prize at the
end.
27. TSW take a test/quiz.
28. Talk about expectations for the trip and what students need for the trip. (no running, stay with your
appointed chaperone, best behavior, etc.)
