1.1.1. Overview
This manual contains information needed for servicing the ALGO® 5 Newborn Hearing
Screener.
Precautionary Information
Important! Incorrect use of the screener and its accessories, or the use of parts and
accessories that are not manufactured or supplied by Natus Medical Incorporated, can
Do not use your screener if there is any suspicion that it is not functioning properly, or if
any parts appear damaged. Contact Natus Technical Service or your authorized service
representative.
Warning! Please avoid practices that can compromise the safe and effective use
of the ALGO 5:
• Do not remove the Panel PC computer from the ALGO 5 unless your service
representative specifically instructs you to do so. There are no user-serviceable parts
inside aside from replacement of the RTC Battery. Installation, modification, or
replacement of any circuit cards, or alteration of the CMOS configuration memory
outside of Natus instructions, may compromise the safe and effective operation of
this device and will void the warranty.
• There is no user access to the computer operating system. Never attempt to load
software into the ALGO 5 that has not been supplied or approved by Natus Medical.
Attempting to load any software or to attach computer accessories or other medical
devices that have not been provided or approved by Natus Medical is expressly
prohibited and will void the warranty.
• Misuse of the earphones or the earphone cable (that is, any use other than that
described in this manual) may result in screening at unknown and uncontrolled
decibel levels.
Warning! The ALGO 5 is not suitable for use in the presence of flammable
Anaesthetic Mixtures with Air, Oxygen, or Nitrous Oxide.
Warning! The ALGO 5 is an electrically isolated system only when the unit is
plugged in through the Isolation Transformer built into the cart and not connected
to any other external system. If the device is to be connected to a hospital
network, the optional LAN Isolator (P/N 040948) must be used between the Panel
PC and the hospital network to maintain electrical isolation of the device.

Should you encounter situations that are not covered by this Service Manual, contact a
Natus Technical Service representative.
Please have your Natus device model and serial number available when calling
Technical Service.
Warning! Do not use the screener if you suspect that it is not functioning properly,
or if any parts appear damaged. Contact Natus Technical Service or your
authorized service representative.
• Remove dust from the screener’s exterior with a soft brush or cloth.
• Clean the exterior case of the screener with a lightly water-dampened soft
cloth.
• To clean the Panel PC, dilute a volume of glass cleaner with an equal volume
of water. Spray a small amount of the diluted cleaner on a soft cloth and
gently wipe the screen.
• Clean the sensor and earphone cables with a cloth dampened with water,
isopropyl alcohol, or a 10% bleach solution. Do not stretch the cables.
Delicate shielding in the wires can be damaged, resulting in electrical shorting.
Refer to your hospital’s protocol for the frequency of cleaning equipment that
comes into contact with the patient.
• Wipe off any remaining dirt or spots on the screener and cables with a cloth
dampened with a mild solution of commercial detergent, hospital cleaning
agent and water, or isopropyl alcohol.
CAUTION: Do not spray or pour cleaners directly on the screener. Keep liquids,
including cleaning fluid, away from the screener’s keyboard, earphone
transducers, and other openings. Never spray cleaner directly onto the screener.
Never use harsh or abrasive chemical products to clean the screener. Do not
immerse patient cables or transducers in water or cleaning solutions.
• The cart may be cleaned with most mild, non-abrasive solutions commonly used
in the hospital environment (e.g., diluted bleach, ammonia, or alcohol solutions).
• The surface finish will be permanently damaged by strong chemicals and solvents
such as acetone and trichloroethylene.
• Abrasive material such as steel wool should never be used to clean any
component of the cart.
• Never submerge the cart base or allow liquids to enter any component of the cart.
Wipe any cleaning agents off cart components immediately using a water-
dampened cloth. Dry all components thoroughly after cleaning.
• Damage caused by the use of unapproved substances or processes will not be
covered by warranty. It is recommended that any cleaning solution be tested on
a small area of the cart that is not easily visible to verify compatibility.
Applicable tests for these standards are listed in following sections (2.3.1-2.3.3).
Technicians must be familiar with the standards applicable to their institution and
country.
4. Subtract the measured value from the baseline value measured in step 2 to get
the ground integrity value. Verify that the impedance is less than 100 milliohm
(0.1 ohm).
5. Ground integrity should be checked whenever a shelf is adjusted in height.
An equipment check is available using the Main Window of the Panel PC (see FIGURE 7
in Section 2.4.1). If the equipment check option is not available from the main window,
access the Service Menu from the Preferences panel to acquire rights via the Profile
Manager.
If the ATA 5 cable is overdue for calibration, the Calibration Dates section in FIGURE 12
shows a red icon next to the <Next calibration> date. Please refer to chapter 2.4.2.2 –

involved in the testing:
2.4.2.1. General
The Service Menu allows performing the following tests in non-screening mode:
The ALGO 5 checks the Due for calibration date of the ATA 5 each time the
screener is turned on. Different Warnings are issued related to the date the
screener is turned on. The procedure is described in FIGURE 14.

Annual calibration of the ATA 5 cable verifies and/or sets the intensity level of the click or
output stimulus.

3.2.1. Replacing the battery for the RTC (Real Time Clock) on the Panel PC
• Unplug all the cables and power cords going to the Panel PC. Make note of
what ports cables are connected to.
• Remove the Panel PC from the cart and place it with the screen facing down
on a table.
• Remove the 11 M3 x 10mm Phillips screws (Natus P/N 800213) that hold the
outer shell on and remove the outer shell.
• Reassemble the Panel PC by following the above steps in reverse, and mount
the Panel PC back on the cart. Take care to tighten the mounting screws on
the cart so that it is secure.
• After replacing the RTC Battery, it may be necessary to set the BIOS settings
on the Panel PC to automatically turn the Panel PC on when the main power
switch is turned on.
o After turning on the main power switch, press the button on the lower right
side of the Panel PC. Immediately press and hold down the Delete key
until “Entering Setup” appears.
o Select the “Power Management Setup” option, press Enter
o Select “PWR ON After PWR-Fail”. Press Enter, and select the option for
“On” and press Enter.
o Press F10 to save, type in “Y”, and press Enter. The system will then
reboot and should operate normally.
• Unplug the power cable leading from the Isolation Transformer to the wall.
• Locate the power inlet module on the Isolation Transformer. Note the orientation of
the power inlet module so as to put it back in the same direction.
• Using a flat head screwdriver, open the power inlet module to access the fuse holder
(refer to FIGURE 21: Open the power inlet module ).
• Using a flat head screwdriver, remove the fuse holder from the drawer (refer to
FIGURE 22)
If the fuses are faulty, replace them with the following type of fuses:
115V:
6.3A,Slo-blw,5x20mm,250V
Natus Part number:000801
Suggested manufacturer: Schurter (P/N 0034.3125 )
230V:
3.15A,Slo-blw,5x20mm,250V
Natus Part number:000800
Suggested manufacturer: Schurter (P/N 0034.3122 )
Reverse the above steps to complete the fuse replacement, making sure that the
voltage selection is the same as it was before the fuses were replaced.
• Run the Acoustic Check as shown below. If Acoustic Check shows a failure condition,
refer to Section 4.3 – High Refer Rate and Section 4.4 – High Ambient.
• Run the Impedance and Artifact Checks as shown below. If the Impedance Check
shows a failure condition, refer to Section 4.1 – High Impedance.
• Run the Impedance Check as shown below. If the Impedance Check shows a failure
condition, refer to Section 4.1 – High Impedance.
See the ALGO 5 Assembly Instructions for additional details on part identification.
