Introduction

Throughout the decade, the use of technology has significantly improved.

In fact, there are many technologies invented to help us in our daily lives such as
to communicate one person to another, and it aids us to ease our studies/works.
Therefore, most of the people rely on their lives in technology. One of the most
used technology is the cellphone. A cellphone is a device used to communicate,
streaming of social media, to get limitless information and a lot of other functions.
Cellphones have also harmful effects not only on health but also on academic
performance.

In this research, the researchers will find out the level of perception of
grade 10 students on the effects of using cellphones to the academic
performance in Physics subject at Innovative College of Science and
Technology. The importance of this study is to find out if the grade 10 students
use cellphones efficiently based on their academic performance. The discoveries
of this study will benefit the teachers and students by monitoring the use of
mobile phones and to know how to use cellphones efficiently considering that
cellphones play an important role in Physics subject.

The cell phone has been one of the quickest developing advancements
and necessities in the world to date. It is an invention that has made the twenty-
first century totally not the same as some other in our history. Mobile devices can
be used to enhance classroom learning. Some of the useful features include the
ability to access information, record data, and create podcasts (Chartrand, 2007).
They can also be used as a way to gather data for classroom presentations and
enhance interactivity in large classroom settings (Scomavacca, Huff, and
Marshall 2009), and serving as an alternative to “clickers” used in personal
response systems (Pellowe et al., 2014). It is also a trend that mobile devices are
replacing traditional tools such as dictionaries, timers, and digital cameras.

2
Currently education is making a move toward the use of more technology
within classrooms ranging from elementary to collegiate level. In high schools
and colleges, devices being used most commonly for educational purposes not
only mobile phones but also laptop and tablets. These devices are being used in
hopes of enhancing student’s academic performance. Students are using
devices for activities such as, taking notes, researching, and communicating.
Although the intended purposes of these devices are to improve educational
experiences for the student, there have also been negative effects of modern
technology in the classroom. Although there is a lack of understanding of how
student mobile phone usage affects their academic performance.

This research demonstrates the level of perception of grade 10 students

on the effects of using cellphones to the academic performance in Physics
subject at Innovative College of Science and Technology. The importance of this
research is for the benefit of 1.) Students because they will realize the
consequences of spending too much time on their cellphones. 2.) Physics
teachers because they will manage the use of cellphones in their class and, 3.)
Other researchers because they will use this research to serve as a reference on
the effects of cellphones on grade 10 students that they might use for their
research.

LITERATURE REVIEW

According to Burns and Lohenry (2010) , over 94% of students owned

cell phones and although not everyone who carried a cell phone was the cause
of classroom distractions, there remains a definite need for educating students
on cellphone etiquette.

Gore (2010) According to the research and data analyzed through the Chi-
Square, it was calculated to be .18. This value did not exceed the .05 level of

3
significance. Means that her research rejects the statement that using cell
phones as a learning tool will positively affect classroom grade.

Arshi (2017) on his research Teenagers are totally addicted to texting.

Excess messaging can lead to Teen Tendonitis (TTT). It can cause pain in the
hands, back and neck due to poor posture. It can also lead to impaired vision and
even arthritis down the line.Having a cell phone will tempt your teen to spend all
day talking or texting, instead of doing anything productive. Studies have proven
that teens who spend too much of their time with their cell phones are more
prone to stress and fatigue.

Foreign Literature

A study by Bianchi et al., using predictors from addiction literature, the

study sought to predict problematic mobile phone usage. It keyed in on factors
they believed to cause mobile phone disorders. 195 subjects of both genders and
an average age of 36 (ranging from 18-85 years old) were interviewed. The
results lead to the creation of the Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale. This scale
was compared to the Addiction Potential Scale. Fundamentals that were used to
compare the scales and create the Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale were the
amount of time one uses their cell phone and the type of usage. The behavioral
predictors that influenced the amount of cell phone usage were: being
extraverted, possessing low self-esteem, and being young. These characteristics
were fundamental in determining problematic cell phone use. The study showed
that these behavioral predictors did not influence the amount of cell phone
usage: gender, and neuroticism. The scale developed was designed to help with
implementing any interventions for potential addictive behavior.

In a literature review of Womack, J. & McNamaracell, C., they explored

phone use and its impact on academic performance of students in college

4
classrooms. Statistical data on cell phone use in the classroom may offer insight
into how prevalent the effects of cell phone use are on academic performance
(Olmsted & Terry, 2014). Over 95% of undergraduate students own cell phones,
as noted across multiple studies (Elder, 2013; Olmsted & Terry, 2014; Pettijohn,
Frazier, Rieser, Vaughn, & Hupp-Wilds, 2015). With the widespread ownership of
cell phones among students, cell phone usage in the classroom is probable. Of
the students who own cell phones, Froese and colleagues (2012) found that 75%
have their cell phones with them in every class period. Likewise, in a study
published in 2012, Tindell and Bohlander found that even more students, 95%,
bring their cell phones to every class meeting. However, only between 8% and
9% of students turn their phones completely off during class time (Berry &
Westfall, 2015; Tindell & Bohlander, 2012)

Local Literature

Another work by Xinhua, Filipinos are using their mobile phones not only
to communicate but also as mobile computers as well, according to a recent
market study. According to Taylor Nelson Sofres, a global customized research
company said in its report that Filipino consumers are not just using cell phones
to call and texting messages and photos, but also as a means to have "internet-
on-the-go," allowing users to be always online. Of the 38,000 respondents in
Metro Manila, 75 % of the respondents surveyed used mobile phones to take
photos or videos; 45 % to browse the internet; 44 % to access their social
networking sites, and 37 % to check their emails. The study was conducted from
November 2012 to January 2013. "Based on the findings of the study, the
increase in various mobile activities explain the growing trend of Wi-Fi
accessibility in public areas," said TNS Philippines Managing Director Gary de
Ocampo. According to DO 70, s. 1999 and DO 83, s. 2003 of Department of
Education, the use of cellphones have diverted the attention of students from
their studies. Moreover, reports show that text messaging are causing
disturbance to the classes and being used to cheat during examinations. As a

5
respond, school officials are directed to ensure that text messaging during class
hours and within school premises should be stopped, at very least closely
monitored and regulated.

Synthesis of the Reviewed Literature and Studies

The studies and literature that the researchers bring are a useful
device to complete the study. The foreign and local literature along with the study
is somehow associated with each other and is extremely beneficial in solving the
dilemma of this research, which is to determine the effects of the cellphone to the
academic performance in Physics subject of the grade 10 students at Innovative
College of Science and Technology.

The local literature focused on maximizing the use of cellphones in the

public areas of our country. Additionally, it also demonstrates the rules and
regulations governing the use of cellphones in Innovative College of Science and
Technology.

The foreign literature explained the relationship of the prevalence of

cellphones to the harmful physical and psychological effects of mobile phones. It
also clarified what makes a cellphone cause distraction and why does it lower
student’s academic performance.

While the local and foreign studies function as a proof that mobile phones
are still making addictions and distractions to the students which make them
neglect their academic activities which in turn, the academic performance suffer.
However, the studies also suggest that cellphones are also used to increase
environmental awareness such as PAGASA, & Project NOAH that is used to
deliver warnings on disasters. Furthermore, the studies also showS that the
cellphone users in Innovative College of Science and Technology have high
preference towards features of mobile phones especially the ones that are

6
convenient and comfortable, allowing them to admire high-quality cellphone
brands.

Theoretical Framework

Constructivism Theory by John Dewey

The Constructivism theory emphasizes that the learners working within

their mind individually in order to build their own knowledge, which explains that,
the knowledge is not transmitted to them in a way or another. The most
significant change that constructivism theory adapts is the integration of
technology in the education setting. In fact, research has proven the
effectiveness of using constructivism theory on the integration of technology in
education. Indeed, constructivism theory has been able to use technology to
serve constructivism principles theory. From these constructivism methods, the
learner works on construct and build their own knowledge on (his/her) prior
knowledge using mobile learning technology.

Multimedia Learning Theory by Richard Mayer

Multimedia learning refers to the use of visual and auditory teaching

materials that may include video, cellphone, and other information technology.
Moreover, Multimedia Learning Theory focuses on the principles that determine
the effective use of multimedia in learning, with emphasis on using both the
visual and auditory channels for information processing. In general, this theory
highlights that using multimedia devices such as cellphone to learn is effective
because give instructors the ability to stimulate both the visual and auditory
channels of the learner, resulting in better progress.
