WHAT IS

VOLCANO?

A volcano is a vent or
'chimney' that connects
molten rock (magma) from
within the Earth's crust to the
Earth's surface.
The volcano Includes the
sorrounding cone of erupted
material.
Parts of a Volcano
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL
INTERNAL PART
OF A VOLCANO
Magma Chamber

A magma chamber is a
large underground
pool of liquid rock
found beneath the
surface of the earth.
LAVA
Lava is the molten
rock expelled by a
volcano during an
eruption and the
resulting rock after
solidification and
cooling.
ASH
Fragments of lava or
rock smaller than 2
mm in size that are
blasted into the air by
volcanic explotions.
SILL
A planar sheet of magma
which is parallel to the
surrounding rock. Sills
store magma compared to
dikes which transport
magma.
Conduit/Pipe

It is an underground
passage where magma
travels through.
Throat

Entrance of a volcano.
The part of the
conduit that ejects
lava and volcanic ash
PARASITIC
CONE
A small cone-shaped
volcano formed by an
accumulation of
volcanic debris. It
forms from eruptions.
Vent

An opening at the
earth's surface from
which volcanic
material, as lava,
stream, or gas is
emitted.
CRATER
A volcanic crater is a
circular depression in
the ground caused by
volcanic activity.
Sorrounds a volcanic
vent.
Lava Flow

streams of molten rock

that pour or ooze
from an erupting vent.
ASH CLOUD

A cloud formed from

tiny ash particles and
gases blasted from the
volcano.
EXTERNAL PART
OF A VOLCANO
SUMMIT

Summit is the
highest point or
the apex of a
volcano that has an
eaither a crater or
a caldera.
SLOPE

Slope is a surface of
which one end or
side is at a higher
level than another;
a rising or falling
surface.
BASE

The base of a
volcano is the lowest
part, bottom, or
supporting layer of
the volcano.
