STRUCTURAL DESIGN REPORT 5
Abstract

The dead, live, wind and seismic loads on a four-storey residential building, consisting of

structural load bearing walls and wall footings, were analyzed for the design of the structural

components to include the gravity, seismic and main wind force resisting systems (MWFRS) and

the moment resisting systems.

Design Approach

All designs are done in accordance with Standard Design Codes & Practices. Structural

elements will be design using the Limit State Design approach. The IBC guidelines will

govern the designs, under which, concrete designs will be done in accordance with the

ACI 318-14 code and ASCE 7-16.

The architectural drawings are firstly reviewed in order to determine the arrangement of

the wall panels in the structure. The structure will then be modeled and analyzed using

Staad.Pro structural design software to obtain design results for relevant structural

elements. This software allows the user to prepare a model using the geometry and the

properties of the physical elements and apply the possible loading conditions in order to

design structural elements or obtain the results for reaction forces, moments, stresses

and other forms of output information.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN REPORT 6

Dead and Live Loads

The dead loads consisted of the selfweight of the structure and an additional area load of 15 psf
added to floor slabs. The live load of 40 psf was added to the floors and roof.

Wind Load Analysis

American Society of Civil Engineers Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for

Buildings and Other Structures ANSI/ASCE 7-16 was used to determine the MWFRS Wind

Loads for Enclosed, Partially Enclosed, and Open Buildings of All Heights (Chapter 27):

Risk Category

The risk category was determined as Risk Category 2 [table 1.5-1].

Basic Wind Speed

700-year return period wind speeds are given as design wind speeds for category 2

structures (with wind load factor = 1). A 150 mph (76.0 m/s) wind speed was used as the ultimate

wind speed for exposure category 2.

Seismic Load Analysis

Earthquake designs are based on the provisions of the International Building Code (IBC)

– 2015 and American Society of Civil Engineers Minimum Design Loads and Associated

Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures ANSI/ASCE 7-16. As per the Equivalent Lateral

Force Procedure:

Occupancy Category

The occupancy category was determined to be category 2.

Site Classification

Where the soil properties are not known in sufficient detail to determine the site class,

Site Class D shall be used unless the building official or geotechnical data determines Site Class
STRUCTURAL DESIGN REPORT 10
E or F soils are present at the site [IBC Section 1613.3.2].

Therefore, Soil Site Classification = D.

Site Coefficients and Risk Targeted Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCER) Spectral

Response Acceleration Parameters

From the Jamaica Spectral Seismic Hazard Maps:

Figure 3. IBC based hazard map for Jamaica for site class average rock with 2,475-year return period for
spectral response acceleration of 0.2 second

Figure 4. IBC based hazard map for Jamaica for site class average rock with 2,475-year return period for
spectral response acceleration of 1.0 second

Sign convention for MZ: A positive moment will mean a moment causing tension at the

top of the member. Conversely, a negative moment will cause tension at the bottom of the

member. The top of a member is defined as the side towards positive local y-axis.

the structure, considered separately along each principal axis.
Case 2: Three quarters of the design wind pressure acting on the projected area perpendicular to each
principal axis of the structure in conjunction with a torsional moment as shown, considered
separately for each principal axis.
Case 3: Wind pressure as defined in Case 1, but considered to act simultaneously at 75% of the

accordance with the provisions of Section 27.4.1 and 27.4.2 as applicable for buildings
of all heights.
2. Above diagrams show plan views of building.
3. Notation:
Pwx, Pwy = Windward face pressure acting in the X, Y principal axis, respectively.
PLx, PLy = Leeward face pressure acting in the X, Y principal axis, respectively.
e (ex, ey) = Eccentricity for the X, Y principal axis of the structure, respectively.
MT = Torsional moment per unit height acting about a vertical axis of the building.

Reinforcement Design of Wall:

The location of the critical section for flexure in the stem is at the base of the stem; for
flexure in the toe, at the front face of the stem; and for flexure in the heel, at the rear face
of the stem (ACI 318 -Section 13.2.7.1).

Assuming tensioned controlled section:

j ≔ 0.95 ϕb ≔ 0.9 f'c ≡ 20 MPa fy ≔ 400 MPa

εc ≔ 0.003 εt_limit ≔ 0.005 β1_b ≔ 0.85

Rebar_dia ≔ 12 mm
