SUMMARY

“HOW MY BROTHER LEON BROUGHT HOME A

WIFE”

A tall woman with a lovely face and a delicate grace. From the ca celin carretela,
she descended.
“You're a baldo”.
She put a gentle hand on baldo's shoulder as she turned to face him.
She has long, unpainted nails, a morning papayas are in bloom scent, and a dimple
on her cheek as she smiles.
"And this is the labang I've heard so much about."
She turned to look at labang, who was constantly chewing his cud. He inhaled and
brought up more cud, and his internal organs made a drum-like sound.
"You may now scuff his forehead"
Despite her hesitation, she approached Labang and touched his forehead. Labang
continued to chew his cud with his large eyes partially closed. She began very
delicately scratching his forehead over time.
The two trunks were placed on the grassy side of the road by Leon, the brother of
Baldo. From the station to the edge of Nagrebcan, he paid Ca Celin twice the
customary fare. He ran his fingers through his horse's forelock as he stood in front
of it and watched Ca Celin, unable to take his gaze off of her.
“Maria”
He made no mention of Maring or Mayang. He realized then that he had always
referred to her as Maria, which was a lovely name.
“I agree, Noel”.
Now, Baldo wonders how she came up with that name. He quietly considered the
situation, fearing that Father might not approve. But he soon realized that it
sounded good.
“Nagcebran is there, Maria.”
Gesturing broadly westward.

"You love Nagrebcan, don't you, Noel?"

At the bend in the camino real where the large duhat tree grew, Ca Celin drove off
loudly hi-yi-ing to his horse while rattling the handle of his braided rattan whip
against the wheel spokes.
They were the only people on the roadside.
