Introduction:

Software defined radio (SDR) has emerged as a priority theme of research since it will substitute
for conventional implementation on wireless communication system. Software defined radio
is a feasible solution for reconfigurable radios, which can perform different functions at different
times on the same hardware. Similar to other digital communication systems, the transmitter of a SDR
system converts digital signals to analog waveforms. These waveforms are then transmitted to the
receiver. The received waveforms are down converted, sampled, and demodulated using software
on a reconfigurable baseband processor. Normally, high-performance digital signal processors and/or
FPGAs are used to serve as the baseband processor.
4-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) is chosen to be the modulation scheme of the designed
software defined radio system noting that this modulation is widely used for data transmission applications
over bandpass channels such as FAX modem, high speed cable, multi-tone wireless, and satellite channels.
In particular, digital cable television and cable modem utilize 64-QAM and 256-QAM. Here, the software
implementation of the QAM modem system is accomplished using MATLAB/Simulink as a time-efficient
and cost-effective solution.

Objectives:

• To design a band efficient digital modulation and demodulation Scheme.

• To design a transceiver for a baseband section of SDR to achieve High data rate.
• To build a reconfigurable system by employing different channels for communication.
• To optimize the design by reducing the inter symbol interference, SNR and BER.
• To improve the spectral and channel efficiency through Adaptive modulation.
• To design a modem using adaptive modulation that is used in IEEE 802.11(Wi-Fi),
IEEE 802.16(Wi-MAX) technology

Software requirements:

Here, the software implementation of the QAM modem system is accomplished using MATLAB/Simulink
as a time-efficient and cost-effective solution. Simulink is a graphical extension to MATLAB for modeling
and simulation of systems. In Simulink, systems are drawn on screen as block diagrams. Many elements of block
diagrams are available, such as transfer functions, summing junctions, etc., as well as virtual input and output
devices such as function generators and oscilloscopes. These virtual devices will allow you to perform simulations
of the models you will build. Simulink is integrated with MATLAB and data can be easily transferred between
the programs. In this tutorial, we will apply Simulink to the examples of modeled systems, then build controllers,
and simulate the systems.
