LEARNING OBJECTIVES
TRACTION
PURPOSE OF TRACTION
1. For immobilization
2. To correct & prevent deformity.
3. To prevent or lessen muscle spasm and pain.
4. Prevent further fracture.
5. To maintain good body alignment
6. For Support
PRINCIPLES OF TRACTION
1. The patient must be in a supine or dorsal recumbent position.
2. The traction must be continuous.
3. There must be a counter traction.
4. There should be no friction.
5. The line of pull must be in line with the deformity.
HOW TO PREVENT FRICTION
1. There should be no knots near the pulley.
2. Weights should be hanging freely.
3. Cords should be running along the groove
of the pulley.
4. Observe for the wear and tear of the ropes
and the bags.

PRINCIPLES IN THE
APPLICATION OF SLINGS
1. Start application from the medial aspect of the Thomas splint & fasten at the lateral aspect
with clips or pins (to prevent injury)
2. Apply slings snugly, not too tight (so as not to impede circulation) nor too loose (which
defeats the purpose of support)
3. The smooth surface of the slings should come in contact with the patient’s skin
(To prevent skin irritation)

APPLICATION OF SLINGS
