THE WEISSENSEE UNIVERSITY OF ART BERLIN IS
UNIQUE!
The curriculum was designed in the early days,
when the university was founded more than 50
years ago, and today it is more up-to-date than
ever. Although students choose a field of study,
they start with a one-year interdisciplinary
foundation course, on the basis of which they
specialize. For the examination of topics and
ideas, there is an extensive the- oretical-
scientific offer as well as practical and project-
oriented work. Unparalleled opportunities for
interdisciplinary work in eleven workshops
round off the program.
The exchange of content between the
disciplines is desired and possible up to the
examination. Cross-border thinking,

ever new challenges that demand imagination,

THE S T U D Y
Start of study
Admission for first-year students is only
possible for the winter semester, starting in
October. For transfer students, admission is
possible for the summer and winter
semesters.
Duration of study
The design specialties: Fashion Design, Product
Design, Textile and Surface Design & Visual
Communication offer an 8-semester Bachelor's
degree (240 CP), after which you can apply for
the one-year Master's degree (60 CP). The
liberal arts degree programs with majors in:
Ma- lerei, Sculpture, and Stage and Costume
Design cover a standard study period of ten
semesters and you will graduate with a diploma
(300CP).
All degree programs start with the one-year
artistic-creative basic study program.
Study structure
The entire study program is modular, the
modules and their contents can be found in
the module handbook (at www.kh-berlin.de

Interdisciplinary basic studies
The basic studies are completed by students
from all degree programs together in mixed
groups.
It is one of the profile-defining features of the
weißensee kunsthochschule ber- lin and, in
addition to elementary pictorial knowledge, is
intended to enable students to act in a
communicative way that goes beyond their
own course of study. The students are able to
develop sensual-immediate and analytical-
systematic skills.
The students will try out different working
methods in a practical comparison and reflect
on them theoretically. The central subject is the
teaching of the basics of art and design. In
addition to the questions of necessary
craftsmanship, creative and artistic processes
are experienced from as many different
perspectives as possible in lively practice.
Fundamentals courses: Drawing, Visual
Imaging, Spatial and Plastic Design, Digital
Media, Anatomy/Mor- phology.
Stay abroad
The weißensee kunsthochschule berlin has an
intensive student exchange program with more
than 100 partner universities, academies and
colleges in Europe, Asia, the USA and Canada.
At the International Office of the weißensee
kunsthochschule berlin, second-year students
can obtain information about ERASMUS
exchange places or other opportunities for a
stay abroad and submit their applications.
Workshops
The art academy offers further interdisciplinary
work opportunities in the eleven workshops. In
the workshops, artists and designers can try out
artistic and creative designs on models or
objects. The workshops provide an introduction
to basic craft skills and have the material
equipment for the most important techniques.
There is a bookbinding workshop, a silkscreen,
gravure and lithography workshop, the elab for
interactive technologies, a wood, ceramics and
metal workshop, model making, metal welding,
the photo workshop and more. In addition, the
in-house library and computer studio round off
the range of services.

December 10 each year and is valid for the
upcoming winter semester (October 1).
Application for the summer semester is not
possible.
Artistic aptitude test
The aptitude test begins with the submission of
the portfolio with approximately 20 of the
applicant's own creative works, which make it
possible to assess the applicant's individual
artistic expression. Drawings, paintings, photos,
collages, sketchbooks, drafts and samples of
work are desired (originals if possible, three-
dimensional work and canvases should be
photographed. All media are allowed, digital
work should be submitted on a flash drive
rather than CD or DVD as not all computers
have drives for this anymore. The portfolio
should be easy to handle, not larger than DIN
A0.
The portfolio must be marked with the
application number mentioned in the invitation
and handed over directly to the admission
committee in the department on the first day

examination always takes place at the end of
the winter semester, at the beginning or in the
middle of February of the year.

kindly requested to request a confirmation of
their application for the examination in due

No subject or form is specified by the

Application/Admission
The application for a study place can only be
made after passing the artistic entrance
examination! Suitable applicants will receive an
application for admission from the weißensee
kunsthochschule berlin. This must be sent with
the relevant documents to the Admissions
Office of the weißensee kunsthochschule berlin
within the specified application deadline. The
application deadline is a cut-off deadline. There
is no allocation of study places via the
Foundation for University Admission, according

For the registration to the aptitude test the
language proof of the level A2 is sufficient! The
corresponding examination certificate must be
submitted by the start of studies in October at
the latest. (German native speakers and those
who can present a German Abitur are exempt).
Preliminary internship (BA design) and stage
design)
Preliminary internships should last 6-8 weeks
and be completed in a field of professional
practice relevant to the study program. It is
possible to have several shorter internships
credited together. The aim of the pre-study
internship is to acquire knowledge and
experience of elementary working techniques,
materials and working processes. Completed
vocational training in the relevant field may be
claimed as evidence of the internship. A
preliminary internship or vocational training is
considered a necessary prerequisite for

Certificate Recognition
The general university entrance qualification is
only required in the design subjects; the secu-
rity school leaving certificate is sufficient if the
"special artistic aptitude" in the Eig-

Change of university
A change of university to weißensee kunst-
hochschule berlin is only possible after
successfully completing the 2nd semester in
the same degree program. It is recommended to
contact the professors of the department
beforehand. The admission committee of the
department decides on the admission, the
examination board decides on the recognition of
academic achievements. The application for a
change of university is made online and must
be submitted in December for the summer
semester and in May for the winter semester.
Master's degree after the BA
Qualified graduates can follow the bachelor's
program with a one-year master's program. In
the master's program, students are given the
opportunity to deepen their acquired
knowledge and skills. Application is always
possible from March 1 to April 30 for the winter
semester.
Enrollment/Fees
For enrollment, proof of health insurance and
payment of the semester fee of about 300€ are
required (enrollment or administration fee,
social contribution, AStA and semester ticket).
Tuition fees are not charged.

Applying/Studying with a Disability or Chronic
Illness
Applicants and students with disabilities or
chronic illnesses can arrange individual
compensation for disadvantages in consultation
with the Student Affairs Office and the relevant
department if the application procedure,
examinations or courses cannot be completed
in the prescribed form due to the

A very good opportunity to find out about
