What Kind of Bond Am I?

Name: ______________________ Date: ______________

Objectives:
1. Measure and observe properties of various substances
2. Arrange the substances into groups based on its properties
3. Classify substances as ionic or covalent compounds

Materials:
 Dropper (at least 2)
 Sugar
 Salt
 Water
 Conductivity apparatus
 Ethyl alcohol
 Baking soda
 Juice
 Beaker
 Graduated cylinder
 Test Tube
 Alternatives: stove and pan
 Alternatives: transparent mug

Procedure:
A. Melting Point

1. Observe each solid substance. Record your observations.

2. Place about 5g of each substance into the 10 mL beaker. Properly label it carefully.
3. Heat the beakers for 2 minutes or until the substances start to melt. Record the temperature on
the table below when the substance starts to melt.

B. Solubility

1. Choose one from the solid substances, and pour about 1 g of it into a clean test tube. Add 10-
15 drops of water, and gently shake the test tube for 3-5 minutes. Record your observation.
Repeat this step for the other solid substances.
2. Repeat step 1, but instead of using water, pour 10-15 drops of alcohol in each substance.
Record your observations in the table below.

C. Conductivity

1. Prepare solutions of each of the solid substances using water as solvent.

2. Using a conductivity setup, test each of the solutions. Record your observations in the table
below.

Substance Melting Point Solubility in Solubility in Conductivity

Water Ethanol (Yes or No)
Salt
Sugar
Juice
Baking Soda

Guide Questions:
Note: For numbers 1-6, it should be done in groupings)
1. Which of the solid substances were soluble in water? How about those that were insoluble in
water?
2. Why are those substances soluble in water? How about those that are insoluble in water?
3. In terms of melting point, which groups of substances have higher melting points? How about
low melting points? Explain.
4. In terms of conductivity, which groups of substances conducts electricity? Which of them
cannot conduct electricity? Explain.
5. What type of chemical bonding occurs in those substances? Classify them.
6. If the solvent used in the experiment was kerosene, which substances will be dissolved in
kerosene? Explain.
7. How did you find the activity? Did you encounter any difficulty in doing the experiment?
Share your experiences. (Take note that this question will be done individually. Kindly never
forget to write your name in the worksheet.)
