Lesson Objectives The student will be able to identify the different meanings of homophones
through class discussion.

The student will be able to construct two sentences using homophones


accurately through "Homerun Homophones".

The student will be able to determine the appropriate placement of


homophones in a sentence.

- Homophones on pieces of paper large enough for students to see
from a distance.
- Smartboard
- Stylus
- Canva Presentation

- Every student will have at least 2 opportunities to have an "at bat"
during the Homerun Homophones assessment.
- Students complete a multiple-choice entrance slip.

Introduction Display a riddle as a warmup for the class.

Provide an entrance slip for each student.


- Allow 3 minutes for students to complete.
- Review previously learned homophones once all slips are turned in.

Review previously learned homophones (there, their, they're/to, too, two).

Tell students that we will be learning two more homophones that often lead
to confusion: vour, you're, and its, it's.
Sequence of activities Remind students that next week's spelling test will be on the homophones.

- Display both words on the smartboard and explain the difference
between the two words.
(its = possessive) (it's = it is)
- Explain ,to students that "it's" is not possessive, but instead short for
"it is". "Its" is possessive and shows ownership.

- Display examples of how to use "it's" in a sentence.

Assessment: Homerun Homophones


- Split students up into two teams
- One team "bats" while the other team "fields"
- Mr. Smith acts as the "pitcher" and stands in the middle of the
classroom.

- The pitcher holds up a sign with a homophone


- The "batter" stands at home plate and reads the word
- The "batter" will then come up with a sentence that shows they know
the meaning of the word.
- If correct, the student moves to the next base.
- If incorrect, the student goes to the end of the line for their team.
- For every person that makes it around the bases to home plate, the
team gets a point.
- When three students guess incorrectly, the team is out, and the other
team gets a turn.
- Play until 3 complete innings have been played.
- Winning team is awarded 1 ticket for each student or candy.
Lesson Wrap-up Tell students to pick up the "bases" and return to their seats.
Exit ticket: fix the mistake.
- Your dog is sleeping in it's bed.
- Students turn to a friend and explain what is wrong with the sentence.
