2-2 Application of Content

The candidate understands how to engage learners through interdisciplinary

lessons that utilize concept based teaching and authentic learning experiences to
engage in effective communication, collaboration, outside resources, reading,
technology, and in critical and creative thinking.

A well-rounded music education includes multi-subject integration within lessons.

As a music teacher, it is important that I connect the music that I teach with content
or techniques/activities from other content areas. Within my lessons, I try to make it
a point to include some sort of social studies connection such as teaching about a
song’s history so that students know the people behind the music. My first artifact
includes a presentation for my students that I use to teach them the history behind
a song. Social studies is not the only content area that students can be connected
to in music class. In my second artifact, my lesson plan dictates that students are to
listen to the great work Pictures at an Exhibition and then use their creative writing
skills to write a story that they are hearing in the music. As that piece is already
based around pictures, I thought that bringing out an important aspect of music
(storytelling) would be a great way to integrate creative writing into this assignment.
However, in my music classroom, we also strive to use technology in a way that
advances 21st century skills. The third artifact is a lesson plan from my secondary
unit plan that integrates the use of technology. Implementing the use of technology
in music is a great way to engage students in a unique way. GarageBand is a great
musical tool that allows students to experiment with music. Students can
experiment with balance of low, middle, and high voices. These three examples all
use skills from other content areas that are also contributing to their musical
experiences.
