DP Operations

 At the present time, DP vessels are engaged in a

huge variety of tasks and operations.
 These operations encompass many different
vessel types. This section attempts to describe
briefly a number of these vessels and their
operations. These operations include, but are
not limited to, the following:

4. Contingency Plans
• Make appropriate contingency plans relating to the
evaluation of the various information, warning and
alarm messages communicated to the operator and
relating to their contents to cover any foreseeable
system failure or operational requirement.

• Contingency planning also to include appropriate

“escape routes” for the vessel.

5. Checklists
 The need for the completion of appropriate pre-DP and other
checklists is very important.

6. Co-ordination and Agreement
Co-ordination and agreement at the planning stages is very
important between the:
➢ Master
➢ Officers and DPOs
➢ Operational supervisors.
➢ Superintendents.
➢ Client representatives and other involved parties.

8. Limitations of the DP system

The limitations of the DP system when conducting

operations in areas of shallow water and strong tidal
conditions must be taken in consideration.

Simulator Training
 Draw up worksite plans using UTM co-ordinates.
 Describe and demonstrate the procedures to be followed
when approaching any worksite, and transferring from
conventional vessel control/navigation to DP control.
 Demonstrate the essential communications channels
necessary during DP operations, and the testing procedures.
 Conduct vessel positioning maneuvers following previously
agreed plans.
 Organize DP watch keeping procedures observing
recognized safe working practices.
 Conduct the correct watch hand-over procedures,
completing appropriate checklists.
