Curriculum Vitae. What are the uses of each document?

Differences of Resume, Biodata, Bionote and Curriculum Vitae

Details: A CV tends to be more detailed than a resume. Biodata is a detailed document that
provides a comprehensive summary of a candidate's life along with career information. Resumes
are more of an overview of a candidate's career.

Length: Typically, a CV can be over two pages long. You can limit resumes to one or two
pages. A biodata is usually over two pages long.

Content: A CV includes all your skills and certifications and is customisable for a larger
audience. A resume includes only relevant and active certifications. You can customise your
biodata as per the intent.

Similarities of Resume, Biodata, Bionote and Curriculum Vitae

CVs and resumes are both an overview of your accomplishments, experience and skills and are
used to get you an interview. From a marketing perspective, they are both advertisements for you
and your work.

Uses of Resume, Biodata, Bionote and Curriculum Vitae

Resume

The purpose of a resume is to introduce yourself to employers, present your qualifications, and
secure an interview. The goal of writing a resume is to showcase your experience, education, and
skills in a standardized format which is easy for recruiters to read.
Biodata

Essentially, biodata highlights a number of details about a person such as; name, age, color,
height, skills, hobbies, allergies etc. Oftentimes, this serves as a criterion for evaluating or
assessing the individual in question. In many cases, a biodata is used for profiling an individual.

Bionote

The bio-note helps the reader to situate the writing – be it chapter or paper or book. When the
reader understands key points about the writer, they have an idea of where the argument in the
text is coming from, and perhaps something of the reasons the text has been written.

Curriculum Vitae

Your CV will highlight your educational and professional experiences when applying for
academic (faculty), research positions, academic postdoctoral research opportunities, grants, and
fellowships. Keep in mind the purpose is also to have the hiring committee interested in
interviewing you.
