Applying Polya's show your solution:

 

1. One
number is 3 less than another number.  If the sum of the two
numbers is 177, find each number.
2. Mr. Jones has a total of 25 chickens and cows on his farm. How
many of each does he have if all together there are 76 feet?

1. x + y = 177 3y - 3 + 3 = 177 + 3
x = 2y - 3 3y = 180
2y - 3 + y = 177 3y/3 = 180/3
y= 60
x = 2(60) - 3 = 120 - 3 = 117
Y = 60, x = 117
x + y = 177
Answer : The two numbers that is equal to 177 is 60 and 117.

cow + chick = 25
4cow + 2chick= 76
cow = 25 - c
4(25 - chick ) + 2chick = 76
100 - 4chick + 2chick = 76
100 - 2chick = 76
-2chick = -24

chick = -24 / - 2 = 12
chick =12
25 - 12 = cows
cows = 13
Chicken have 2 feets and Cow have 4 feets
12 x 2 = 24
13 x 4 = 52
52 + 24 = 76

Answer: In Mr. Jones farm there are 12 chickens and 13 cows and if all
together there are 25 animals with 76 feet.
