M5 - Lesson 4 Check-in Activity

Problem:
One hundred people were asked to rank their preferences of four candidates
for president of their club, using 1 for their favorite and 4 for their least
favorite. The results are shown in
the table below.

Candidates Ranking Ranking Ranking Ranking Ranking

A 2 2 2 2 3
B 1 4 4 3 2
C 3 3 1 4 1
D 4 1 3 1 4
Total 30 24 18 12 10

Which candidate would be the favorite using

a) The Plurality with Elimination voting method?

30+24+18+12 +10 +6 = 100

100 / 2 = 50
Majority = 50 or more

Assume that 1 2 3 4 is A B C D

B = 30+ 24+18+12+6 = 90
C = 10

B is equivalent to 2

Candidate A was the most favorite than the 3 other candidates ,

b) The Borda Count voting method?

1= 30 X 3 + 24 x 1 + 18 x2 + 12x1 + 10x2 + 6x3 = 200
2= 30 X 4 + 24 x 4 + 18x4 + 12x4 + 10x3 + 6 x4 = 390
3= 30 x 2 + (24x2) + (18x1) + 12x3 + 10x4 + 6x1 = 208
4= (30x1) + (24x 3) + (18x3) + (12x2) + (10x1) + (6x2) = 202

2 is winner and the one with the most votes of 2 is Candidate A so Candidate A is
the Winner.
