VTS video analysis Name:_____Sara Geiser __

Total:________/24 points

Answer the following questions while watching the video…

1.) How did she get started with the activity? (3points)

She got started with the activity by talking about using their eyes to see what they notice in the
picture. She keeps reminding students to use their sense of sight with their eyes. They looked
for 30 seconds.

2.) What kinds of questions did she ask, how did she follow up? (3 points)

What do you notice?

What else can we find?
What do you see that makes you think that?

She pointed at the clouds when the student noticed it because then it helps make sure that all
the students were on the same page with their observations. She made them justify their
answer. She was connecting it to other students’ thoughts about the artwork. She paraphrases
or restates what the student said.

3.) What kinds of thinking strategies were practiced by the students? (3 points)

Some strategies that were practiced was problem solving and predicting. They see a cloud, so
they think it is going to rain. Helps develop oral language and communication skills. It can also
help with class discussions by learning how to take turns to speak. Help with their higher level
thinking.

Now process what you just saw and discuss the following questions at your table…

4.) How could we connect this activity to the elements and principles? (5 points)

You could connect this activity to the elements and principles by asking students about them.
For example, you could ask students “What colors do you see in this painting?” “Why do you
think the artist used these colors?”. You could talk about any of the elements and principles and
elaborate on each of them. This would be a great way to get students thinking about how to
identify these things within an artistic piece.
5.) What kinds of follow up or next step activities could we do after something like this? (5
points)

Some next step activities that you could do would be having students create an artistic piece of
their own. After they create the artistic piece have them talk about what elements and
principles they used. You could have them elaborate and observe other students’ projects and
have them describe what they see. You could show some of the students’ art to the whole class
and have the same discussion with the class but with their own art. For example, show one of
the students’ art pieces and have the same questions. Like “What do you see?” “What makes
you think that?” “What elements were used?” “Why do you think this element was used?”. I
think this would be a good activity because then it gives students a feeling of belonging when
the class is discussing their art piece they created.

6.) Elementary Ed. how could this be used cross curricularly? Art Ed. how could this transfer
into a project? (5 points)

You could use this cross curricular by having students write about the piece. It would involve
language arts and visual arts. I would have students observe the piece and write about what
they noticed and why they think the artist would add those things to the piece. This would be
for the older elementary grades with students who can write. For the younger grades you could
read a book about the elements of art and have a discussion about the elements within the
piece.
