Okay so Good Morning Everyone.

I am John Prince Elorde, and today we will going to

discuss the Topic No. 4 which is all about the architecture. So syempre dahil nasa
Pilipinas tayo, let's discuss the history of architecture in the philippines.

Okay let's proceed to our discussion, so for the first slide kindly read po....

Ayan, thank You Maam/Sir

So yung history ng architecture in the philippines, It reflects the architectural heritage.

silang nagagawa, yun nga lang, the sources or materials that they use for architecture is
Yung dating
simpleng architecture lang, mas napalawak at mas napaunlad pa nila. Like for example
For example, Sa Tirahan,
so if the human have an evolution, syempre ganun din sa mga tirahan, hindi naman
And same goes with the
churches that had been established. Nagpagawa ng mga simbahan, kase meron na
silang Religion na nadiskubre that time. Ayan po

(So next Slide, kindly read po)

Ayan thank you Maam/Sir

So as we all know, diba sinakop nga tayo ng mga European Countries, particularly; the
Spain and the America. So Kasabay ng pananakop nila sa bansa natin,
naimpluwensyahan din pati yung cultures and tradition na meron tayo. Also same goes
here with the architecture, karamihan sa mga houses, buildings and etc. Lahat yan may
impluwensya ng Spanish at American. Kase start from traditional houses they turn it into
developing modern houses with different architecture style.

(Okay next slide, kindly read po)

Okay thank you maam/sir

So isa sa mga literal na pure philippine architecture style natin is yung paggamit ng
landscape when it comes to architecture design. Pero yun nga, since that time dipa
masyado nadidiskubre or nadedevelop yung mga other materials like yung mga cement
materials. Pamilyar kayo sa bahay kubo right? So yun yung isang example ng
landscape architecture na nabuo dati, and also since pure Filipino design nga yun, it is
also known as the Traditional House in the Philippines.

(Okay? next Slide, kindly read po)

So nung 19th century, dito na nagsimula magpagawa at magpatayo ng mga bahay that
is made from bricks and solid stone foundations, kase bakit? Para mas patibayin at
patatagin yung tirahan nila. So mostly, syempre mayayaman lang ang
nakapagpapagawa neto, while some other Filipinos, still remains with their traditional
houses which is yun nga, yung bahay kubo. More likely kase, etong mga bahay na
made from solid stones, or should we say na bahay na bato, it more likely considered
as the updated version of bahay kubo. Kase still pure Filipino architecture design parin
ito. But still the main structure that is based from bahay kubo, still the same with bahay
na bato.

(Kindly read the slide)

Okay thank you maam/sir

So
pag sinabi po nating Antillean Architecture, it means, this is the type of architecture that
is designed to be suitable for tropical climate. Meaning, this is the architecture na para
sa malamig na panahon. But, yung structural style ng architecture nato is, still Filipino
Style but in a unique way or style. So kumbaga, Filipino style or structure sya, pero
yung design, coming from the Spaniards, But it still a Filipino Architecture.
(Kindly read the slide)

Okay thank you maam/sir

Spanish Period, also, pati yung pagtatayo ng mga schools, buildings at hospitals, it also
had the architecture design, influenced by this Spanish Conquerors. Gaya nalang
halimbawa netong Ateneo at ng Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas.

(Kindly read the slide)

Okay thank you maam/sir

So, after ng philippine revolution noong 1887, eto yung naging simula ng paglaya natin
sa Spanya. But, after this, syempre sumunod naman yung America, which is also part
of European Countries na nanakop satin.
So ano
So
They design it
in a very respective manner, na kumbaga pag makikita mo yung architecture nayun,

(Kindly read the slide)

Okay thank you maam/sir

So yun after ng World War, dito naman nagsimulang sumibol yung tinatawag nating
Modern Era, which is the Era where the technology also had been invented. So dito na
It's an
international modern style, so meaning, kahit sa ibang bansa may ganyan ding klase ng
architecture. It looks so simple and straight design but it is their chief mode of
expression in this modern age.

Okay, so now. Kung may architecture in the philippines, well of course, there are also
national architects in the philippines. So ngayon, kilalanin natin, kung sino sino ba itong
mga kilalang Architects sa Pilipinas, because some of their works design, alam ko
pamilyar kayo, pero yung mismong nagdesign nun is di nyo kilala. Okay so lets
proceed.

Okay so first in the list, we have here Leandro Locsin,

(Kindly read the slide)

Okay thank you maam/sir

So si Leandro Locsin, ay isa sa mga Heroes of Philippine Architecture, bakit po? Kase
his architecture designs, is reflecting to philippine arts and culture. And also some of his
bagay sa architecture, can you tell what it is mga teachers? Anyone? Anjan napo yung
sagot sa slide.

(Pag may sumagot)

Okay thank you maam/sir

Okay, he believes that the true philippine architecture is the product of two great
streams of culture, the oriental and the occidental. Ano po ba yung difference ng
oriental at occidental culture? When do we say oriental, it means East or East Asia
meaning, kulturang mula sa Silangan, in which our country belongs. And when do we
say Occidental, this is the West, or should we say, this is where the european countries
belong. So balikan natin yung
paniniwala ni Leandro Locsin, sabi nya Philippine Architecture is the product of oriental
and occidental cultures. Why? Kase we all knew that the European Countries,
influenced the philippine culture and architecture. But Im not saying na panget yung
architecture ng Philippines if it is their own style. No, what I mean is, yung architecture
kanluraning mananakop. So that's what Leandro Locsin meant when he says that.

Okay, so now, alamin naman natin, kung ano yung mga famous architecture works ni
Leandro Locsin. Im sure some of his works, siguradong pamilyar kayo.

So here, we have the Cultural Center of the Philippines, which is located on Roxas
Boulevard in Manila's Pasay City, and the Church of Monastery of the Transfiguration it
is located naman sa Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, next is the Church of Saint Andrew
naman na matatagpuan natin sa Bel-Air Village Makati City, and then the Church of the
Holy Sacrifice, it is located naman sa UP Diliman Campus, Quezon City, and the
Tanghalang Mariang Makiling naman which is an iconic theater in the philippines,
matatagpuan naman sya sa Los Baños, Laguna, next is the Istana Nurul Iman, so this
Nurul Iman means "Palace of the Light and Faith" and it is also considered as the
world's largest residential palace. Next naman is yung, Manila International Airport o
yung Ninoy Aquino International Airport, NAIA Terminal 1 in short, which located naman
sa Paranaque, Metro Manila Philippines, Benguet Center or yung Banco De Oro
Building which located in Baguio City, and the Philippine Pavilion naman na
matatagpuan sa Osaka Japan, and the last is the Folk Arts Theater which located
naman sa Pasay, Metro Manila, ayan po. So madami pang Architecture works si
Leandro Locsin, but I only listed yung mga famous architectural works nya.

So the next architect naman, we have Ildefonso Santos which is known as the Father of
Philippine Landscape Architecture.

So kindly read the slide...

sa Landscape, so pag sinabi nating landscape, these are the features of an area of
countryside or land. Meaning reflecting the nature or environment. Kaya nga mostly sa
mga architectural works nya is mga Park, Plaza at mga Green Spaces. And this
architecture style doesn't have any considerations of any other cultures or influenced
coming from the european countries.
Okay so eto yung mga examples ng architectural works ni Ildefonso Santos, I only listed
some of his famous works, i didn't include all. So here we have the Paco Park which
can be found in Paco, Manila. This park was once a Manila's Municipal cemetary that
built by dominicans during the spanish colonial period. And next is the Tagaytay
Highland Resort which considered as the best showcase of Ildefonso Santos Tropical
Landscape style. Next naman is malarayat golf and country club, it is located naman sa
Lipa City, Batangas, and next is the Orchard Golf and Country Club na matatagpuan
Ildefonso Santos.

Okay next architect naman is, Pablo Antonio,

(Kindly read the slide...)

Okay thank you maam/sir

You can see it from his works,
kase most of his works are so simple, walang kung ano anong mga ibat ibang disensyo,
as in simple at straight na design lang. Pero it reflects the modern architecture style
when you see his works.

So
on the First picture we have the FEU Administration and Scince Building which can be
found in Sampaloc, Manila, next to it is the Manila Polo Club which is located in Makati
City, next is the Ideal Theater, so hindi lang school, also theater buildings are some of
architectural works design of Pablo Antonio, so this Ideal Theater is located in Rizal
Avenue, Manila, and then next to it is the Lyric Theater which considered to be the most
presentable and modernized sort of theater. Matatagpuan naman natin ito sa Escolta,
Manila. Next is the Galaxy Theater which is located din same goes with Ideal Theater,
sa Rizal Avenue, Manila. And also same goes with Capitan Luis Gonzaga Building.
Next is the Boulevard Alhambra, but now it is called Bel-Air Apartments, which can be
found in Roxas, Boulevard. And the last one is the Ramon Roces Publication Building
which is now the Guzman Institute of Electronics, na matatagpuan naman sa Quiapo
Manila.

(Okay so next, kindly read the slide)

Okay thank you maam/sir

Nakpil. Ayan so balik tayo, Juan Nakpil's architecture style is parang combination ni
Leandro Locsin at Pablo Antonio. Kase his architecture style, reflecting also the
spanish at american period. And same goes with Pablo Antonio, kase bakit?
Okay so now, alamin natin kung ano yung
mga famous architectural works ni Juan Nakpil.

Okay so as you can see, these are the architectural works of Juan nakpil, we have here
the Magsaysay Building in Roxas Boulevard, the Philippine Village Hotel in Pasay City,
the Capitol Theater in Escolta, Manila, Captain Pepe Building in Recto Avenue, Manila,
the Manila Jockey Club in Pasig City, Metro Manila, and the Rufino Building naman in
Rufino Street, Legaspi Village, Makati, the SSS Building in East Avenue, Diliman,
Quezon City, next is the Rizal Shrine, actually the old rizal shrine was destroyed during
the world war 2, so kaya yung Rizal Shrine na makikita nyo ngayon is, reconstructed
lang during the 1950, next is the Quezon Hall naman which located in Osmeña Avenue,
Diliman, Quezon City, and for the last we have the Gonzalez Hall UP, which is the
University Main Library of UP Diliman, that is named after the 6th UP President
Bienvenido Gonzalez. Ayan po.

So next, lets proceed naman sa iba pang architect, ayan, we have Francisco Mañosa

(Okay kindly read the slide...)

Okay thank you maam/sir

His architecture design is
architecture, ganto lang dapat gagamiting materials ah, so meaning to say parang hind
kahit ganun pa man, still his architecture designs, perfectly suitable and talagang
So yan, as you can see, he is using
this native materials for his architecture, yung coco lumber, rattan, shell, thatch and also
pati yung mga indigenous textiles like the metal, glass and concrete. Usually kase itong
So ayan, now,
Mañosa at pano to naging unique sa ibang architecture.

So ayan, as you can see in the first pic, we have the, Coconut Palace or also known as
the Tahanang Filipino, which located in pasay city, Manila, so etong coconut palace
pagbisita sa Pope John Paul because of that, okay next, so pati yung bahay nila si
Francisco Mañosa din yung nagdesign, and its called the Mañosa House which is also
the well-known house na matatagpuan sa 179 Saranggani Street, Ayala Alabang, okay
next, the Amanpulo, Amanpulo is a resort that can be found in Pamalican Island,
Palawan, next is the Pearl Farm Resort, na isa sa mga Luxury Resort with distictive
then we have the mactan shangri-la Resort and spa, which is also a luxury resort and a
5star hotel in shangri-la mactan, cebu, next is the eskaya beach resort and spa, isa to
So next, ayan
the Las Piñas Bamboo Organ Church, so usually diba, pag church mostly solid stone
foundations yan, pero imagine solid stone foundation nga yung labas, pero yung nasa
loob made from bamboo, so see?
Francisco Mañosa in designing this Las Piñas Bamboo Organ Church, next namn is
yung Ateneo Professional Schools, which located in Makati, Metro Manila, actually this
school is very expensived, and have a high standard in education, in terms of being a
globally competitive student, that’s why it is called professional school. Next is the
Aquino Center and Museum in Tarlac City, and for the last, we have the Mary
Immaculate Parish Church that is also known as the Nature Church or Folocare Church
that can be found naman sa Las Piñas, Metro Manila, so yan as you can see ganyan
church, that why it is called nature church. Ayan
Okay so now move on to our next architect, na gusto kong pasalamatan ng sobra, kase
he’s the first person who made the architecture design of the church ng religion na
kinabibilangan ko ngayon, ang Iglesia ni Cristo.
(Okay so kindly read the slide…)
Okay thank you maam/sir
Ayan, just like what I’vs said earlier, sya yung architect na nagdesign ng mga
naglalakahihang gusaling sambahan ng Iglesia ni Cristo, even though he is a Catholic,
the INC is very thankful for him for making the architecture design of our churches.
pagdesign pa ng ibang INC Churches all over the World, usually yung mga common Inc
churches na makikita nyo is patriangle tas may dalawang parang tower sa magkabilang
side, yung ganun architecture design, it’s either si Carlo Santos talaga mismo naging
architect for builting that architecture o ginamit lang nilang basis yung architecture
design ni Carlo Santos for builting other INC churches. Ayan, so I listed only 2 of carlo
santos Major works, mostly kase sa iba nyang architectural works is puro INC churches,
so just like what I’ve said earlier, kung may makikita kayong InC churches na patriangle
So here’s some of his works,
Ayan, yung Templo Central, which is also considered as the largest INC Church all over
the world.
lahat ng INC Churches, which also became the basis for other inc churches architecture
design. So kumbaga, pag sa malapitan, I can say na yung templo central is parang
combination ng 3 INC Churches ganun po sya kalaki, so if you want to see it for
Ayan, okay so next
naman is yun LSM Administration Building, LSM stands for Lourdes School of
Mandaluyong, just like what I’ve said earlier hindi lang sa INC but also pati rin sa
catholic meron ding architecture design si carlo santos, so isa natong LSM
Administration, hindi sya Church instead, it is a Catholic School that can be found in
Mandaluyong City.
And now let’s proceed to the last architect, which is also an architect na karamihan sa
kanyang architectural works is Catholic Churches, si Jose Maria Zaragoza
(Kindly read the slide….)
Okay thank you maam/sir

So yung architecture style ni Jose Zaragoza reflects the spiritual and secular
requirements. So it means, all about religion yung architecture designs nya, he based
his standards for this in mid Century catholic churches in the philippines.
So here’s some of his architectural works;
Ayan, so first we have the Santo Domingo Church, which formally known as the
National Shrine of our Lady of the most holy rosary, and isa rin to sa mga largest or
biggest churches in the Asia, which can be found in Quezon City, next is the Our Lady
of Rosary Church which is located in Caloocan City, and the Don Bosco Church which
is one of the famous landmarks in Makati City, and the convent of the pink sisters
naman which can be found in quezon city, next is the San beda convent which also
known as the Abbey of our Lady Montserrat which located in Mendiola, and the Villa
San Miguel naman which contains 2 chapel, the big and small chapel, that is located
naman sa Mandaluyong, next is the Pius 12 Center, which can be found in Paco,
Manila, and the Union Church which also one of the best known church in Makati City,
and the last one is the Quiapo Church which known before as the minor basilica of the
black nazarene, and also known as the parish of saint john the baptist, so daming tawag
no? Kaya pinaiksi nalang sya Into Quiapo Church, so kaya ganun yung tawag dun sa
quiapo church it is because this is the famous home of the black nazarene, ayan. So
They
might be differ in style but still their architecture design contributes a lot for the
philippines, ayan po,
Okay so move on to our next discussion, let's find out naman kung ano ba yung mga
Major Influences sa Philippine Architecture,
So first one, is the tropical climate.

(Kindly read the slide....)

Okay thank you maam/sir

So kung natatandaan nyo pa, sinabi ko kanina to, yung architecture style na dinala ng
Spanya dito sa Pilipinas, kung maaalala nyo, Antillean Architecture, and ano nga ba ulit
yung antillean architecture? Eto yung architecture designed for tropical climate, yun po.
tayong dalawang season actually, tag init at taglamig. So kaya kung magtatayo ka ng
philippine architecture, karamihan kase sa architecture sa Pilipinas, more on traditional

Okay next (kindly read)

Okay thank you maam/sir

So, in short, it's all about religion influences. This is one of the reasons why there's a lot
of churches had been establish even in mid-century, kase that time they already have a
religion, so dahil nga ganun, syempre they need an specific place to perform their
traditions and rituals base on their religions and beliefs, pero here in Philippines bihira
yung christian churches.

Okay next (kindly read the slide)

Okay thank you maam/sir

So eto kanina pa natin to nababanggit diba, spanish is part of european countries who
influenced and conquered us, and yung influence na dinala nila dito sa Pilipinas is yun,
panahon.

And for the last one, well of course the American civic and international style, gaya nga
din ng sabi ko kanina, one of the influenced that american brought here in the
philippines was their influenced in civil government that makes them look in respected
manner. And also pati yung education natin, Americans din po yung may influenced,
Pilipinas, that turns the traditional architecture into modern style of architecture, ayan.
So yan po yung mga Major Influences in Philippine Architecture. Okay
And now, magpoproceed na tayo sa mga Iconic Architectural Works in the Philippines,
is pamilyar. So the first one is the Bahay Kubo or the Nipa Hut.
(Okay, kindly read the slide)
Okay thank you maam/sir

So gaya ng sabi ko kanina, it can be considered as part of landscape architecture.

Kase, Bahay Kubo is the traditional and National Dwelling of Filipinos that symbolises
the nation's resourfulness. Kase alam naman natin na yung Bahy Kubo is made
from.natural or native materials, although it is design for a fewer populations, we can't
still deny that Bahay-Kubo is one Filipino great Architecture, kase eto it is really a pure
Filipino Architectural Style. Ayan po, so that's one of the best iconic architecture in the
philippines that still can be seen until nowadays.

Okay next one is, Bahay na Bato

(Kindly read the next Slide..)

(Pag walang gustong magbasa, ako na magbabasa)

Actually nabanggit kona din kanina diba? So remind ko lang po ulit, Bahay na Bato is
the Updated version of Bahay Kubo, bakit? Kase yung main structure or style ng
materials.
And yung
Again,
bahay na bato is the updated version of the traditional home bahay kubo, magkaiba
man sa itsura, but yung structural design, still the same. So hanggang jan lang po yung
part ng report ko, we will continue to discuss the rest of the iconic architectural works in
the philippines, may I call on Mr. Eluzon, to continue the discussion, okay take it away
sir. Thank You teachers for listening.
