RESOLUTION OF VECTORS

OBJECTIVES:

APPARATUS/MATERIALS: Octet cube, 4pcs spring balance and.

SET – UP:
THEORY OF DISCUSSION:

PROCEDURE:

I. Two – Dimensional Forces

Method I: Force Table

1. Hook 3 pieces of the spring balance on one face of the octet cube. The three balances
should be connected by one tie to make them coplanar forces.
2. Name the balances as F1, F2 and E
3. Pull at most 2 balances and make it a point that the tie between the strings coincides the
intersection of the screen.
4. Record the readings of the forces and the coordinates of the tie and end strings.
5. Determine the resultant.

Method II: Graphical Method

1. Use a convenient scale i.e. 5 grams: 1 centimeter, use the two forces, F1 and F2, given in
method (I) graphically by using either the parallelogram method or the polygon method.
Use the ruler and protractor in this method.
2. Determine the resultant.
Method III: Component Method
1. Determine the resultant of the two forces, F1 and F2 given above using the component
method.

II. Three - Dimensional Forces

Method I: Force Table

1. Hook 4 pieces of the spring balance on any face of the octet cube. The four balances
should be connected by one tie to make them concurrent forces.
2. Name the balances as F1, F2, F3 and E
3. Pull at most 3 balances and make it a point that the tie between the strings coincides the
intersection of the screen.
4. Record the readings of the forces and the coordinates of the tie and end strings.
5. Determine the resultant.

Method III: Component Method

1. Determine the resultant of the three forces, F1, F2 and F3 given above using the
component method.
