Abstraction
Infinitives- are the “to” form of the verb.
- a verbal consisting of the word “to” plus a verb (in its simplest
"stem" form) and functioning as a noun, adjective, or adverb.
Examples:
-The infinitive form of “learn” is “to learn”
-to read
-to write
Functions of Infinitives
1. As the subject- the topic being talked about in the sentence
- In this context, the infinitive verb acts as the action driving the
sentence.
Examples: To rest is all she wants to do after a long day at
work.
To dance is to live.
To swim in that sea may be dangerous.
2. As the complement- it follows a linking verb and tells something
about the subject
Examples: His ambition is to fly.
What is essential is to maintain a healthy diet.
My dream is to travel more.
3. As an object – it follows a transitive verb.
- It can act as the noun or noun phrase that receives the action of the
verb.
Examples: Everyone wanted to go.
I desire to study alone.
I like to write in English.

(Add the other 2 functions, as an object of preposition

and appositive and include the infinitive phrase.)
