POSITION PAPER: OFFERING RESERVE OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS
(ROTC) TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Introduction

The Reverse Officers Training Corps (ROTC) aims to provide military

education and training for students to mobilize them for national defense
preparedness. It is thought and accepted that ROTC fosters a culture of duty and
discipline; offers the chance to instill the principles of patriotism, nationalism, and
character-building; and offers training that will help students improve their
leadership abilities. For many years, the ROTC program in the Philippines had a
significant impact on the lives of youths. Many people dislikes it and even
question its value in helping male youths pursue higher education. Additionally, it
played a crucial role in the corruption and abuses. The ROTC program, however,
has undergone a number of unrecognized name changes. Through the ROTC
Program, youth can learn nationalism and become more disciplined. Therefore,
ROTC should be adopted in the Philippines.

Body

The purpose of the ROTC program is to lay a strong basis for instilling
nationalism and patriotism in young people so they can grow up to be
responsible adults with the knowledge, values, and motivation to support and
defend the nation’s institutions and sovereignty. It aims to establish in youths in a
military training atmosphere while they are still young a feeling of purpose,
discipline, and respect for the law and the authorities, as well as compliance to
rules and regulations. Along with the sense of discipline and patriotism that one
gains through actively participating in ROTC, one also becomes prepared to fulfill
the ultimate obligation of defending the Philippines from foreign attack, given that
everyone has a responsibility to defend the state.

The ROTC has a long history in educational institutions being mistreated,

harassed, and corrupted. Media coverage of the program’s physical and
psychological abuse had alreadt gained traction. In the guise of training, which is
nothing more than a violation of their rights, officers insult, assault, and harm
cadets. The majority of individuals are against making it compulsory. Since the
program turned into a haven for abuse and fostered dread among youth, some
have contented that ROTC is not benefiting the students at all.
One can acquire these abilities to interact successfully in the military and
among civilians with the help of the ROTC program. It can learn history,
strategies, and physical fitness in this program, as well as build leadership skills
and practical experience. Both the military and the civilian sphere place a
premium on leadership abilities. It is an effective instrument for teaching
nationalism and discipline to young Filipinos. The ROTC can incorporate disaster
preparedness and resilience. Senior High School Students are to be prepared by
the ROTC for potential duty in the defense establishment in the case of an
emergency.

Conclusion

In conclusion, implementing ROTC in all schools across the nation while

students are still young is the ideal approach to instill qualities that are very
important to the Filipino youth, like as patriotism and nationalism. It helps
students improve their leadership abilities. The ROTC program aids in instilling
and displaying patriotism and nationalism in today’s youth, as well as helping
them recall the heroic efforts performed to secure the nation’s freedom.
