1 Introduction
Slump test is the most commonly used method of measuring consistency of concrete

which can be employed either in laboratory or at site of work. It is not a suitable method for

very wet or very dry concrete. It does not measure all factors contributing to workability, nor

is it always representative of the placability of the concrete. However, it is used conveniently

as a control test and gives an indication of the uniformity of concrete from batch to batch.

Repeated batches of the same mix, brought to the same slump, will have the same water

content and water cement ratio, provided the weights of aggregate, cement and admixtures

are uniform and aggregate grading is within acceptable limits. Additional information on

workability and quality of concrete can be obtained by observing the manner in which

concrete slumps. Quality of concrete can also be further assessed by giving a few tappings

or blows by tamping rod to the base plate. The deformation shows the characteristics of

concrete with respect to tendency for segregation.

1.1 Aim

This test is to measure the workability of fresh concrete mix using slump cone.

1.3 Importance of Test

The slump test is a very important industrial test for evaluation of workability of fresh granular-
cement paste material, especially concrete. The test method is used as a generic tool for
classification of a wide range of mixtures and can deal with a wide range of workabilities.

2 Materials and Instruments

2.1 Materials

1. Fresh concrete mix (cement, water, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate) for preparation of
the fresh mix

2.2 Instruments

1. Mold (Slump Cone) :(200mm diameter in bottom, 100mm diameter in top and 300mm
height, thickness no less than 1.15mm)
2. Tamping rod: (600mm in length and 16mm in diameter)
3. Base plate (or rigid surface area)
4. Small shovel
5. Measuring device (Ruler)

3 Test Procedure
1. First bring Cement, Sand, Gravel and water by desirable proportion to produce a fresh concrete.
(Figure.1)
2. Moisten the mold cone and place it in a flat, nonabsorbent, rigid surface.
3. Hold the mold firmly in place by standing on the two pieces on either side of the mold.
4. Fill the mold in three layers, each layer approximately one third the volume of the mold.
5. Rod each layer with 25 strokes by tamping rod, uniformly distribute the strokes over the cross
section of each layer.
6. For the bottom layer, this will necessitate including the road slightly and making approximately
half of strokes near the perimeter, and then progressing with vertical strokes helically towards the
center.
7. Rod bottom layer with its entire depth, and make sure rodding the second and top layer with
strokes penetrating into underlying layers (approximately 1 in).
8. Level the top layer and rod it by tamping rod.
9. While Roding continue holding the cone and then clean the area surrounding the cone.
10. Raise the mold carefully in vertical direction in 5±2 seconds with no lateral or tortional or
inclined motion.
11. Put the mold beside the slumped concrete in inverted mold, immediately measure the slump by
determining the vertical distance between the top of the mold and displaced original center of the
top surface of the specimen (Figure2). If a decided falling away or shearing off of concrete from
one side or portion of the mass occurs disregard the test and make anew test on another portion of
the sample. (Figure.3)

5 Discussions

In our last test we found about slump of concrete to get workability of the concrete however we
gained the aim of the test we mixed the concrete by (1:0.6:2:4) proportion as desired and as a
result we get (50mm) of Slump according to (Table.1) as shown below the workability of our
concrete test is (Medium) ranged and the slump type is True, as well as the Recommended type
of construction is (Reinforced foundation walls and footings, Plain footings, caissons, and
substructure walls) according to (Table.2) as shown below generally the result is logical and the
concrete be able to use in the types of construction which indicated, one error I noticed the
concrete not mix properly and it’s due to our mixing not proper as desired, the group A2’s slump
test result was (1mm) of slump which is very low or near zero workability cause of low Water to
Cement Ratio which they use (0.5 W/C) that concrete not be able to use or very hard but the
proportion of Cement, Sand, Gravel is the same proportion, main cause of the difference between
our slump and their slump is Water to Cement Ratio.

Recommended slumps for various types of construction

Types of construction Maximum Slump in (mm) Minimum Slump in (mm)
Reinforced foundation walls
3 (75) 1 (25)
and footings
Plain footings, caissons, and
3 (75) 1 (25)
substructure walls
Beams and reinforced walls 4 (100) 1 (25)
Building columns 4 (100) 1 (25)

6 Conclusions

The aim of the Test is measure the workability of fresh concrete mix, The result of our slump test
was (50mm), which was a true slump and medium workability one point that make me struggle
to decide the result is have no error is concrete not mixed properly.
