In the 21st Century Filipino Poetry, our poets use the seven (7)
elements of poetry. These elements are the Line, Stanza, Rhyme, Rhyme Scheme,
Rhythm, Meter, and Figurative Language. Let me explain further how these
elements are important in the making really astonishing poems here in the
Philippines. Firstly, the Line. The Line is a subdivision of a poem that contains a
group of words arranged in a row. The Stanza is the equivalent of the paragraph in
prosaic writing. The Rhyme is the repetition of the end sounds of the words. The
Rhyme Scheme is the way a poem’s rhymes are arranged. Example is ABBA, AABB,
ABAB, etc. The Rhythm is the recurrence of stressed and unstressed sounds in
poetry. The Meter is a system of describing what we can measure about the audible
features of poems. It may be syllabic, quantitative, or accentual. And lastly the last
element, the Figurative Language. The Figurative Language is the words, phrases,
or sentences that contains meaning which deviates from their standard meaning.
Its also the figures of resemblance, emphasis, or understatement, sound, verbal
games, and gymnastics, and errors.
These seven (7) elements are used by our Filipino Poets in many Filipino
poetry forms in the 21st Century Literature. Poetry forms like Textula/Textanaga,
and Rap Battles. Textula/Textanaga is a poetry forms that means mobile text
messaging + tanaga so it became Textanaga. It has four (4) lines, seven (7) syllables
each, and it is mastered by Frank G. Rivera.
Next is the Rap Battle. It is also known as Flip Top Battle League. It is the
first and largest running professional rap battle conference here in the Philippines
founded by Alaric Riam Yuson in 2010. The league promotes Pinoy Hip Hop Culture.
It is influenced by rap battle leagues in the west.
