    The respiratory system consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. The trachea divides into bronchi which divide into smaller bronchioles and terminate in air sacs called alveoli. Asthma interferes with normal functioning by causing the bronchioles to narrow, reducing airflow. During an asthma attack, the muscles around the bronchioles constrict and the bronchioles swell, narrowing the airways and making breathing difficult.
