What is Animation?

Animation is the art of sequencing drawings or

static images together to achieve the illusion of
movement or life
images would have slight variations from one another,
then photographed and played continuously would
make the drawings appear to be animated hence the
term
"animation."

Animation can have different forms like cartoons,

stop motion animation, and claymotion
Earliest cartoons looked like comic books and it can only be
viewed by a limited number of people. With the invention of

film, these drawings can now be projected to a bigger

audience and were able to appreciate the art that is animation

A second of a cartoon would need about 24 drawings or

frames. A thirty minute cartoon would need about 43,200
frames; these are a lot of drawings! And because of this,
animators will have to work with other animators to finish an
episode.
Before the advent of computers, animators

had to draw each and every frame. But now

almost all animation companies use
computers to help the in-betweeners fill in
the movement, thus reducing the time and
cost in making an animation
How does an animation start?
Animators begin with a story. This story would then be
broken down into sequence through a small comic strip like
drawings called storyboards. Main animators usually draw
the important positions of the frames, usually the start and
the end. In-betweeners are the ones in charge of filliping up
the rest of the movement.

Computer Animators
Computer animators, they are the ones who
create images using computers. They can make
an image look two-dimensional or flat 2D, like the
traditional cartoons, or they can make it look
three-dimensional or 3D, like many computer-
generated movies such as Avatar, Toy Story,
Finding, Nemo, Frozen, etc.
Computer Animators
Computer animators make computer generated
images (CGI) which can be a moving image or a
static image like a fantasy landscape in a film.
Computer animators can make 3D images look
so lifelike that it is often very difficult for viewers
to distinguish CGI from live action footage.

Stop motion animators
Stop motion animators are animators that make
use of dolls and puppets with movable joints in the
creation of the film. Animators would move the
object bit by bit and have it individually
photographed. These photographs would be
played continuously at which the object would
appear to come alive and move on its own.
Examples of stop motion
animations are
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Corpse Bride
Examples of claymation
television shows are
Gumby
Wallace and Gromit
