1. Introduction
First off, I would like to introduce myself, the class and the school. My name is Ilma Ključanin
and we are the “Peta gimnazija”, a public high school located in Sarajevo, more particularly,
Dobrinja. Our school is created back in 1969 and it was relocated many times. We are the
graduates of “opšti smjer” (general direction) and in my opinion, by being near to the end, a
qualification is someway given us to talk about this school and high school education in general.
2. History
As I mentioned before, this school was created in the summer of 1969 by Opština Centar. In
September of 1969, 14 classes were enrolled for the upcoming school year. The school was
facing many problems in the beginning, one of them was that only 3 classes graduated that year.
Standards were very high and this school was named a “cowboy school” between the students.
Until the 1971, Peta gimnazija reached some of the major changes which solve the struggles. In
addition to the general major, the linguistic one was created and added to the school program
that year. Also, the school was equipped with new equipment for quality teaching.
The school was developing until the well-known tragedy that hit Sarajevo. In the beginning of
the war in there were nearly 1500 students and 100 teachers in the school. The school building
that was located in the center of the city was now destroyed and the classes were held in
hallways, basements and in abandoned objects. The classes were held mostly in the morning
hours. Luckily, in 1994, an opportunity arose for the Peta gimnazija. The school begin working
in the building of elementary school “Fatima Gunić”
The school was working in the building of Fatima Gunić up until the year 2010. A brand new
building was created as a donation for two of Sarajevo high schools Peta gimnazija and
Gimnazija Dobrinja located in the Senada Poturka Senčija bb street
