A camel's hump does not hold water at all it actually stores fat. The camel uses it as nourishment when food is scarce. INCREASING CONSUMERISM LEADS TO INCREASING JUNK

Dear Readers, A definition of consumerism states, the belief that the buying and selling of large quantities of consumer goods is beneficial to an economy or a sign of economic strength. Well, the very definition starts with a hypothesis that it is a belief. So what is the real thing? Is increased consumerism, really doing good for the economy. Let us consider this in the light of the following facts. In olden days, a product that was bought usually lasted for a very long time. Anything for that matter, be it clothes, cutlery, furniture, electronic appliances or whatsover, the durabilty of the product was a very important criteria in the buying decision. However, today things have changed. We are looking at fashion, trend, the latest in lifestyle, and other external parameters rather than the inside stuff. So, the concept of longevity of a product is not of vital importance, anymore. This inturn has encouraged the manufacturer to make products of inferior quality, because he knows that the consumer is not going to use it for long. By doing so, the manufacturer gets a twin benefit. The first benefit is; he is able to reduce the cost of production and is in a position to offer the product to the customer at a very cheap price. For example, in case of a mobile phone, the manufacturer is aware that the person is not going to use the same phone for more than 3 years. So he decides the components to be used for this product based on this criterion and thereby is able to produce the product at a much cheaper price. From the point of the consumer, the consumer is happy that he has got a product with maximum features, for a minimum price. The second benefit is; as the manufacturer uses inferior quality components, the product becomes non functional in a few days. Nowadays you cannot find anyone to get it repaired, so you are forced to go for a new purchase. This means added business volume for the manufacturer.
P. 2
PALMS PLUS

The concept of repair and mending is slowly moving out of our culture. Just the same way it happened to advanced countries some years back. So there is no much option except to use and throw. Look at the ways our lives have evolved. Not very long back, we had cobblers who could mend our shoes, tailors who could alter our dress, mechanics who would repair our Radio or TV. But today, when you take a product for repair, one of the common responses you could hear is, You could get a new one for the cost of the repair. If you ask, So what do I do with this? you will get an instant reply, Just throw it as junk. The market for second hand products is drastically reducing. If you wish to sell your Old Computer monitor or Old TV, you will find absolutely nobody to buy. With technolgical updation taking place in every sphere, there is no preference for old technology products, and ultimately you have no option except to dump it as junk. Thanks to the discount offers, intelligently disguised as exchange mela, by retailers who want to woo customers to buy their latest products. The junk in your house now becomes the junk in the retailer's godown, which goes on to become metal and plastic scrap. What is the bottom line? It is a huge waste on natural resources and manpower of the country, which are our core assets. We deplete the natural resources and waste human labour, unprudently. The consumer ends up spending more for less value, leading to depletion of his savings. The junk disposed becomes a major environmental hazard. Now tell me, is this beneficial to the economy? The answer is a definite NO. Just because we have an increased affordabilty does not mean we should have a careless attitude, towards buying. Next time before you buy, ask yourself do I really need it. Don't buy something, just because it is available cheap. Don't be carried away with free offers. Nothing is offered free. The cost of the free has been built in the product price. Think twice before you buy.

Happy Reading

SEPTEMBER 2011

Yesterday, I was driving, and the FM radio went off for few seconds. I thought, I should have an iPod. Then suddenly I realized that I have not used my iPod in last 6 months. And then more things, Handy cam in last 2 years, Digital Camera in last 2 months, DVD player in last 1 month and many more. Now I can say that I bought that Handy cam just out of impulse, I have used it twice only in last 4 years. So, whats wrong and where? When I look at myself or my friends I can see it everywhere. We are not happy with what we have but all are stressed and not happy for the things we don't have. You have a Santro, but you want City. You have a City, but you want Skoda. Just after buying a new phone, we need another one. Better laptop, bigger TV, faster car, bigger house, more money I mean, these examples are endless. The point is, does it actually worth? Do we ever think if we actually need those things before we want them? After this, I was forced to think what I need and what I don't. May be I didn't need this Handy cam or the iPod or that DVD player. When I see my father back at home. He has a simple BPL colour TV, he doesnt need 32Sony LCD wall mount. He has a cell phone worth Rs 2,500. Whenever I ask him to change the phone, he always says "Its a phone, I need this just for calls".

I met lot of people, I thought over it again and again, I still dont know if I got the answers, but certainly figured out few things. I realize that one thing which is keeping me stressed is the stay connected syndrome. I realized that, at home also I am logged in on messengers, checking mails, using social networks, and on the top of that, the windows mobile is not letting me disconnected. On the weekend itself, trying to avoid unwanted calls and that is keeping my mind always full of stress. I realised that I am spending far lesser money than what I earn, even then I am always worried about money and more money. I realised that I am saving enough money I would ever need, whenever needed. Still I am stressed about job and salary and spends. May be, many people will call this approach not progressive attitude, but I want my life back. Ultimately its a single life, a day gone is a day gone. I believe if I am not happy tonight, I'll never be happy tomorrow morning. I finally realised that meeting friends, spending quality time with your loved ones; spending time with yourself is the most important thing. If on a Sunday you are alone and you don't have anybody to talk with, then all that luxuries of life, all that money is wasted. May be cutting down your requirements, re-calculating your future goal in the light of today's happiness is a worthwhile thing to do. May be selling off your Santro and buying Honda City on EMIs is not a good idea. I believe putting your happiness ahead of money is the choice we need to make. I think, a lot can be said and done but what we need the most is re-evaluation of the value of happiness and time we are giving to our life and people associate with it.

And believe me; he is much happier in life than me with those limited resources and simple gadgets. The very basic reason why he is happy with so little is that he doesn't want things in life to make it luxurious, but he wants only those things which are making his life easier. Its a very fine line between these two, but after looking my fathers life style closely, I got the point. He needs a cell phone but not the iPhone. He needs a TV but not the Change does not happen when circumstances 32 plasma. He needs a car but not an expensive one. Improves...... Initially I had lot of questions. Change happens when YOU decide to improve I am earning good, still I am not happy...why ? YOUR circumstances!! I have all luxuries, still I am stressed.... ....... why ? I had a great weekend, still I am feeling tired...... why?

replied. "I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts." "Can you open the icebox?" she asked. I said I could. "Then chip off a little bit of ice and hold it to your finger," said the voice. THE OLD PHONE ON THE WALL When I was a young boy, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it. Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person. Her name was "Information Please" and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anyone's number and the correct time. My personal experience with the genie-in-abottle came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer, the pain was terrible, but there seemed no point in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone! Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the parlor and dragged it to the landing Climbing up, I unhooked the receiver in the parlor and held it to my ear. "Information please" I said into the mouthpiece just above my head. A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear."Information." "I hurt my finger..." I wailed into the phone, the tears came readily enough now that I had an audience. "Isn't your mother home?" came the question. "Nobody's home but me," I blubbered. "Are you bleeding?" the voice asked. "No," I After that, I called "Information Please" for everything. I asked her for help with my geography, and she told me where Philadelphia was She helped me with my math. She told me my pet chipmunk that I had caught in the park just the day before, would eat fruit and nuts. Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary, died. I called, "Information Please," and told her the sad story. She listened, and then said things grown-ups say to soothe a child. But I was not consoled. I asked her, "Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?" She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, "Wayne, always remember that there are other worlds to sing in." Somehow I felt better. Another day I was on the telephone, "Information Please." "Information," said in the now familiar voice. "How do I spell fix?", I asked. All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to Boston . I missed my friend very much. "Information Please" belonged in that old wooden box back home and I somehow never thought of trying the shiny new phone that sat on the table in the hall. As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me. Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then.. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy. A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle. I had about a half-hour or so between planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, "Information Please."

Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well. "Information." I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself saying, "Could you please tell me how to spell fix?" There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, "I guess your finger must have healed by now." I laughed, "So it's really you," I said. "I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time? "I wonder," she said, "if you know how much your calls meant to me. I never had any children and I used to look forward to your calls." I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister. "Please do", she said. "Just ask for Sally." Three months later I was back in Seattle . A different voice answered, "Information." I asked for Sally. "Are you a friend?" she said. "Yes, a very old friend," I answered. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, "She said, Sally had been working part time the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago." Before I could hang up, she said, "Wait a minute, did you say your name was Wayne ?" "Yes." I answered. "Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called. Let me read it to you." The note said, "Tell him there are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean." I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant. Never underestimate the impression you may make on others.. Whose life have you touched today? `Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved' - Helen Keller It is not our external behaviour that shapes our destiny. It's our character. Character is like a software which runs a programme called our external behaviour. It is easy to change our behaviour through temporary rewards and punishment. This is manipulation and such a changed behaviour will not last long and we will soon go back to our natural behaviour. We need certain traits and qualities in our life to sustain our effort level. It is not that always we will be encouraged by others. There may occasions when we will be criticized and discouraged. We need to develop an ability to take all such criticism as normal feedback and choose our own course of action depending on our judgment. Our character determines this mindset. In my Life Skills Seminars, I am fond of telling a story. There was an old donkey in a village which was not able to be of any use to its owner. One day the donkey fell into a dried up well. The owner wanted to cover it up by putting all rubbish into the well. Every time some rubbish was put, the donkey will shrug off and step on the rubbish. The villagers also shoveled and dumped all rubbish on the donkey and the donkey shrugged off by shaking off. Slowly the donkey started coming up to the edge of the well and ultimately came out! Moral of the story: Life will shovel dirt on you. The trick is to shake it off and never give up what you have undertaken to achieve. Take one step at a time. Sometimes we should behave like this donkey. We should ignore the negative criticisms that are showered on us and pursue our course of action, if we are definite in our mind about our project. - N C Sridharan www.thetimefoundation.com

TEACHER
'Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel'Socrates Our personalities are moulded by the valuable lessons that we learn from our many teachers. They include our parents, formal teachers at school, skill teachers who teach us music, sports, as well as peers and even our own students. But the roles of parenting, teaching and mentoring generally come into two types. It is pertinent to note that many see the role has one that moulds the personality, akin to a potter shaping a lump of clay. However, each child has infinite potential and is a future tree waiting to grow and bloom. Hence effective teachers are the ones who choose to be gardeners to the seed of potential that lies in the learner. There is an old Chinese saying that underlines the implications of wrong approaches to teaching: 'give a seed to a potter and you shall have a bonsai'. While the potter breathes life into dead clay, the gardener has to take care about not stifling the very life of the learner. The gardener's approach can really shape a personality and script a destiny. And a potter's path can result in tragedy or cause a mutiny. However, the role of a gardener is not as easy as it looks. It requires us to be better at tolerance, facilitation, allowing space and empowering the learner's right to make a choice. William Arthur Ward said it so well: that 'a mediocre teacher tells, a good teacher explains, a superior teacher demonstrates and a great teacher inspires!' Let's BE BETTER at the noble task of teaching The learner-seed is nurtured with gardening! - Pravin K. Sabnis

WORDS OF WISDOM
In reality there is no scarcity; in fact, only limitlessness. So even in thoughts. Refuse to accept anything but the best. Nothing will be yours, unless you are convinced that it belong to you. Rain fills the size of the vessel. What your life will be filled with, scarcity or abundance or adequacy is dependent on the size of your thinking. Your thoughts create your reality. You get what you concentrate on. That which you focus on is what you will attract. Looking and looking for anything often produces it. So focus on abundance. A day comes, when the caterpillar decides that it will not remain a caterpillar anymore. So it goes into its cocoon to develop its wings and becomes a butterfly. Let me caterpillar within you decide to become a butterfly. Give up 'scarcity thinking' and embrace 'abundance mentality'. Everything else will follow. You deserve abundance.

An Excerpt from

by Lewis Timberlake. If you had a bank that credited your account each morning with $86,400 - with no balance carried from day to day - what would you do? Well, you do have such a bank...time. Every morning it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it rules off as "lost" whatever you have failed to use toward good purposes. It carries over no balances and allows no overdrafts. You can't hoard it, save it, store it, loan it or invest it. You can only use it time. Here's a story that drives the point home. Arthur Berry was described by Time as "the slickest second-story man in the East," truly one of the most famous jewel thieves of all times. In his years of crime, he committed as many as 150 burglaries and stole jewels valued between $5 and $10 million. He seldom robbed from anyone not listed in the Social Register and often did his work in a tuxedo. On an occasion or two, when caught in the act of a crime by a victim, he charmed his way out of being reported to the police. Like most people who engage in a life of crime, he was eventually caught, convicted and served 25 years in prison for his crimes. Following his release, he worked as a counterman in a roadside restaurant on the East Coast for $50 a week. A newspaper reporter found him and interviewed him about his life. After telling about the thrilling episodes of his life he came to the conclusion of the interview saying, "I am not good at morals. But early in my life I was intelligent and clever, and I got along well with people. I think I could have made something of my life, but I didn't. So when you write the story of my life, when you tell people about all the burglaries, don't leave out the biggest one of all... Don't just tell them I robbed Jesse Livermore, the Wall

Street baron or the cousin of the king of England. You tell them Arthur Berry robbed Arthur Berry." Here are six terrific truths about time: First: Nobody can manage time. But you can manage those things that take up your time. Second: Time is expensive. As a matter of fact, 80 percent of our day is spent on those things or those people that only bring us two percent of our results. Third: Time is perishable. It cannot be saved for later use. Fourth: Time is measurable. Everybody has the same amount of time...pauper or king. It is not how much time you have; it is how much you use. Fifth: Time is irreplaceable. We never make back time once it is gone. Sixth: Time is a priority. You have enough time for anything in the world, so long as it ranks high enough among your priorities.

YOUR HEALTH IS ALL ABOUT METABOLISM

We sometimes envy a few people because they don't put on weight, no matter how much they eat. And more often than not, we end up crediting it to genes. Putting on weight is due to fat accumulation, and the amount of fat that gets accumulated depends on your metabolism. Win the battle of the bulge by increasing your metabolic rate. Metabolism is the rate at which our body burns calories to sustain life. As we age, our metabolism slows down by as much as 2% a year. A few ways to boost metabolism are: Eating breakfast, giving the body small doses of energy by eating at regular intervals and exercising. Your metabolism stays pumped for many hours after exercise. When you are active, your metabolism soars. Begin your journey towards health by raising your metabolism.

Learn something about Men

I think everyone might have read about Mom's, Wife's and Girl's.. It's time to learn something about Men. A boy/man is one of the most beautiful creations of God. He starts compromising at very tender age. He sacrifices his chocolates for his sister. Later he sacrifices his love for just a smile on his parents face. He sacrifices his love for his wife and children by working late nights. He builds their future by taking loans from banks and then repaying them for the life time. Thus he sacrifices full youth for his wife and children without any complain. Believe me he struggles a lot but still has to hear the music (scolding) of Mother, wife and his boss. Yet every mother, wife and boss tries to have control over him. Finally his life ends up by compromising for others happiness. He is that creature of God who no one can compete with. Respect every boy/man in your life. You will never know what he has sacrificed for you. Just extend your hand when he needs it and you shall receive twice fold love from him.

A man gifted his wife a diamond necklace for their anniversary to his wife, she did not speak to him for 6 months... Why? That was the deal. Women: My husband has developed a habit of talking in his sleep! What can I do to cure him? Doctor: Give him an opportunity to speak when he is awake! Great Thoughts: 1. If your enemies throw a stone at you, just smile and throw back a flower at them.but, make sure you throw it with the pot! 2. When WORDS fail, eyes speak. When eyes fail,"HEART" speaks. But when HEART fails, nothing speaks They put cotton in the nose. Boy in bio practical exam. Examiner: See the birds leg and tell its name. Boy: I don't know Examiner : You fail. What is your name? Boy : Now, you see my leg and tell my name! Teacher to student: When Brahmagupta was correcting your answer paper , he invented 'ZERO'. Two terrorists are having a discussion in a bar. The waiter asks them what the discussion is about? Terrorist: "We are planing to kill 1crore people and a donkey" Waiter : Why a donkey?? Then one terrorist tells the other, "See I told you; Nobody will care about the 1crore people!" This show how the world is !

Sardar was looking at an ice cube for 1 hour. Someone asked him,What are you doing? Sardar replied: Sshh! Do not disturb. I am keenly observing, from where the water is leaking Boy was drunk and came home late To avoid Dad's scolding, he quietly took laptop and start working Dad asked : Are you drunk? Son: No! Dad: Then what are you doing with my suitcase? 3 Things Indian movies taught us: 1: While defusing bomb, dont worry which wire the hero will cut. He will always choose right one. 2: Hero will show no pain when beaten, but will show great expression of pain when the heroine cleans the wound. 3: If Hero decides to dance on the street, everyone he meets will know the steps.
