Introduction
The digital interface of the CMP 150™ high frequency X-ray generator is used to
connect the digital imaging system. It can be configured by setting the
Interface Options through the Console or the GenWare™ utility.

This supplement describes information regarding the digital interface option 40,
which is the setting for the CPI standard interface.

Connections
The digital interface, J25, is located on the Generator Control board. Table 1
contains the connection of the CPI digital interface, Interface Options = 40.

Installing the Digital Imaging System to the Generator

As mentioned earlier in the Introduction and Connections sections, the CPI
control console or the GenWare® MP utility is used to configure the CPI
interface option via the digital interface, J25 on the Generator Control board.
To connect the digital imaging system to the generator and configure the
setting for the interface option, first perform the De-energizing the CMP 150™
X-ray Generator procedure and then perform one of the following procedures:
• Procedure A: Setting up the CPI Digital Interface via the GenWare® MP Utility
• Procedure B: Setting up the CPI Digital Interface via the CPI control console
De-energizing the CMP 150™ X-ray Generator
1. Turn off the generator.
2. Turn off all external customer-supplied voltage sources.
3. Disconnect the power cable from the generator. Without doing so, the high
voltages such as DC bus voltage, 780 VDC and 110/220 VAC remains on
boards and components inside the Generator.
4. Wait at least 5 minutes to allow discharging of all internal DC bus
capacitors. Failure to wait this period could result in unintended exposure
to high voltage.

Warning: Before performing the next step, you must use good judgment and
work practices to avoid injury and damage to equipment.

5. Remove the generator cover and set all the hardware aside.

Figure 2: The LEDs on the Inverter board

Figure 3: The LEDs and DC Bus test-points on the BCB

6. Refer to Figures 2 and 3. Check the LEDs on the Bus Connection board (BCB)
and the Inverter board. If one of the LEDs is ON, it indicates that DC Bus
voltage is stored in the DC Bus Capacitors. If all of the LEDs are OFF, it
indicates that the DC Bus voltage is less than 60 VDC.

Warning: If after 5 minutes, the DC bus capacitors fail to properly discharge,

immediately contact the factory for assistance on how to discharge
the DC bus capacitors safely. Attempting to discharge the DC
capacitors without the proper instructions may cause serious
injuries to service personnel and could also damage the generator.
If the discharge circuit on the generator has failed, the DC bus
capacitors will slowly discharge through the bleeder resistor. This
will potentially take a significant amount of time: 90 minutes for 8
kJ generators, 70 minutes for 6 kJ generators, and 45 minutes for
4 kJ generators.
Do no attempt to discharge the DC BUS to shorten the discharge
time.

7. Refer to Figure 3. Measure the potential across TP1 (+) and TP2 (-) on the
BCB to confirm the DC Bus voltage is below 60 VDC.
Note: To avoid damaging the test points TP1 (+) and TP2 (-) on the BCB, and for
improved access to these points, it is strongly recommended to use flexible probes
to make the measurement.

Figure 4: The location of cable slots

8. Refer to Figure 4. Route the digital imaging system cable through the Slot A.
9. Connect the digital imaging system cable (CPI does not provide this cable)
to J25 on the Generator Control board.
10. Reinstall the generator cover.
11. Reconnect the power cable.
12. Continue with Procedure A or Procedure B.

Procedure A: Setting up the CPI Digital Interface via the GenWare® MP

Utility
1. Connect a null modem cable to the serial COM port of your computer and
the other end to the J22 connector on the CMP150 Generator Control
Board.
2. Apply the power to the Generator.
3. Start the GenWare® MP utility.
4. On the GenWare® MP utility toolbar, click About to open the About
window.
5. Ensure “Digital Interface Options” display in the Features list in the About
window. This means the feature is enabled. If not enabled, do not proceed
with this instruction and contact CPI Customer Support.
6. Click the Close button to close the About window.
7. On the GenWare® MP Toolbar, click Rec to open the Receptor Setup
window.
8. On the Receptor Setup window, set Interface Options to 40.
9. On the Receptor Setup window, click the Apply button to save the change.
Procedure B: Setting up the CPI Digital Interface via the CPI control
console
1. Press and hold the Menu button, and then press the power ON button . Note:
Keep holding the Menu button until the console beeps.
The console starts the start-up diagnostics. If no errors occur, the console
requires the password to enter the GENERATOR SETUP screen.
2. Enter the password by pressing the button sequence: [1] - [8] - [4] - [5].
3. On the GENERATOR SETUP window, select GEN CONFIGURATION.
4. On the GEN CONFIGURATION window, select RECEPTOR SETUP.
5. On the RECEPTOR SETUP window, set INTERFACE OPTS to 40.
6. Select EXIT to go back to the GEN CONFIGURATION window.
7. On the GEN CONFIGURATION window, select RECEPTOR SETUP.
8. Verify the setting for the INTERFACE OPTS is 40. If the value is 40, the setting is
successfully completed. If the value is 0, it means digital interface is locked. Contact
CPI Customer Support.

Theory of Operation
The Generator Control board contains an additional set of inputs and outputs
used to interface to a digital imaging system when interface option is set to CPI
interface option 40.

The interface can be used with a Bucky enabled or disabled for a selected
receptor. When a Bucky is enabled the generator will first drive the Bucky, and
only when the Bucky is ready the generator will drive the detector (Figure 6). If
the Bucky for a selected receptor is disabled, the generator will only drive the
detector (Figure 5). For Bucky interconnections and the instructions on
programming a Bucky interface refer to the Programming the Generator of the
CMP 150™ Service Manual, part number MAN908080.

Generator Output Signals

Prep Request (EXP_PREP)

The Prep Request signal (EXP_PREP) is an output signal from the Generator to a
digital imaging system. The generator will activate the EXP_PREP signal when
the Prep input is enabled (Prep button/switch pushed/pressed) and it will
deactivate the signal when the Prep input is disabled (Prep button/switch is
released) or if the exposure ends or an error occurs.

Exposure Request (EXP_REQ)

The Exposure Request signal (EXP_REQ) is an output signal from the generator
to a digital imaging system. The generator will activate the EXP_REQ signal
when the X-Ray input is enabled (X-Ray button/switch pushed/pressed) and the
generator is ready to expose and it will deactivate the signal when the X-Ray
input is disabled (X-ray button/switch released) or if the exposure ends or an
error occurs.

Exposure on (EXON)

The Exposure On signal is an output signal from the generator to a digital

imaging system. The generator will activate the EXON signal during the
exposure phase. This signal will be inactive during all other generator phases.

Generator Input Signals

Exposure Confirmation (EXP_OK)

The Exposure Confirmation signal (EXP_OK) is an output signal from a digital

imaging system to the generator. For the exposure to get released, the signal
must become active. If the signal does not become active within 10 seconds
from the time the generator is ready to expose, the generator will report an
error 27 – “Receptor Timeout” and return to the Standby state. If the X-Ray
switch is released within the 10 seconds that the generator is waiting for the
EXP_OK signal, the software will report an error 13 – “Manually Terminated
Exposure”. When all the conditions for the exposure release are satisfied and
the input becomes active the generator will release the exposure using current
exposure settings. If during the exposure the signal becomes inactive the
generator will immediately terminate the exposure and report an error 13 –
“Manually Terminated Exposure”.
