Homework 4

B) Iron is separated from the oxides in the blast furnace which consist from the steel
cylindrical shell covered from inside with the firebrick which can withstand higher
temperatures form the regular ones in the blast furnaces.
The coke is used as a fuel for heat production. It burns and produces enough heat
for iron to meltdown.
The charge is dumped in through the bell-shaped opening at the top of the
furnace and the preheated air is blown in under the pressure at the bottom of
the furnace through the line of the openings called tuyeres.

Answers:

• The cast iron is made by purifying or refining the pig iron which is made in the
blast furnace and the main deference is the percentage of carbon in the cast
iron (less then 2 %) and in the pig iron (more then 2 % of carbon).
• The coke is used as a fuel for heat production.
• The term pig iron comes from the old times when the pig iron was first
produced and the whole process of steel production in the blast furnace
reminded them on a mother pig (blast furnace) which feeds their piglets
(series of bars).
