The third week at my internship went well.

My supervisor went out of town for a

conference this week along with a few other interns, so I had to cover the office for her. I liked

working in the office because it helped me be more productive with my time. Other interns came

in and out of the office, so I had more time to get to know them. My duties covering the office

included simply greeting people and answering phone calls. The Office of Sustainability rarely

receives phone calls and when we do, they are usually for recycling pickups. I just simply had to

write down the location and the items to be picked up.

The main challenge I faced this week occurred Monday morning. I was told that the

office rarely receives phone calls, so my tasks seemed very simple. I received a call early that

morning with one of the employees reporting that one of the work trucks had gotten into a wreck.

I was extremely flustered, but I tried to manage the situation as professionally as possible. I

called my supervisor to let her know the issue and sent her pictures of the truck log sheets that

showed who drove the truck last as well as pictures of the truck’s damage. I do not think either

one of us were expecting a situation like that to occur the first day she was out of the office, but

everything worked out in the end and fortunately the truck had minimal damage and more

importantly no one was hurt. As overwhelmed as I was, I am glad that I got to face a difficult

situation at the beginning of my internship because it helped me get over my nerves. I feel more

comfortable working with my supervisor now knowing we could address a difficult situation

together in an efficient way.

After the challenge I faced on Monday, the rest of the week went very smoothly.

Throughout the week I mainly worked on my research project while also helping the other

interns with their project. Next week I will work on submitting my research proposal to submit

for Research Day in March. The overall goal of my project is to observe trends in how students
perceive alternative medicine in hopes of sparking an interest in Sustainability to students.

Hopefully, it will encourage students to take advantage of the garden, and possibly encourage the

office to grow more medicinal herbs for students and faculty to use.
