‘Agriculture being the primary sector plays the most crucial role in
the socio-economic sphere of the country and hence considered as,
‘important sector for food and other employment opportunity. It is
diverse and extensive sector involving large number of players
contributing to the development of the nation. As Mahatma Gandhi
said, “India lives in villages and Agriculture isthe soul ofthe Indian
‘cconomsy”. Agriculture sector at present provides livelihood to 8-60
‘per cent of the total population (The Economic Survey, 2017-18).
This sector provides employment to 48.9 per cent country's
workforce and is the single largest private sector occupation.
However in case of ICAR, which is a nodal organization for
sgrculture research and development in the country (Randhawa,
1989). Likewise, State Agricultural Universities are responsible for
doing the same at the state level. After independence, agricultural
rescasch was given much emphasis which in turn led to increased
‘sgricultural production and near self-sufficiency in food grains and
‘overall development in agriculture inthe country.
State Agricultural Universities (SAU) are vibrant channels in
‘producing technical manpower for operational research, To provide
highly qualified, competitive technical manpower, a well-
‘established system of education is needed (Singh, 2012). In recent
times the quality of agricultural research manpower is subjected
significant attrition due to several reasons like large proportion of
research investments were divertedto salaries, low contingencies for

research, narrowing down of scientific expertise due to inbreeding,
ete, However during the process of development of qualified
Sciemtific manpower, they were trained intensively in subject and
research methodologies. In this context, the students at Post graduate
‘and Doctoral level will be involved in course work and research
‘work to complete their degree.
On the other end, scientific research and technol
developments have made this country a one of the international
leader in the production of many agricultural products (Bank &
‘Alston, 2009). Graduates intending 10 enter the agricultural
industries will need to be well prepared in the basic and applied
‘sciences, as well as business and management disciplines. Post
graduate studies and research will prepare graduates for the
challenging roles in agriculture, at both national and international
levels. The traditional role of primary production has changed so
dramatically that graduates are engaged more in modem areas of
farming and dairy. The demand for agriculture and allied acuvies
that will increase the value of our primary products has resulted in
thenced for graduates beyond the expectations. They arenow sought
after in the areas of research, marketing and technology transfer,
apart from the agriculture they are into the different service
industries allied streams such as, Crown Research Institutes,
‘Treasury, consultancy positions within exporting companics (Leleet
al, 2010). Graduates from agriculture programmes are highly
Sought after both within country and abroad. Students may want ®
‘career where a professional qualification is essential, such &
agriculture, or it may form part of their continuing professional
development. There are also many disciplines in which a research
degree is desirable, such as working in public and private

With reference to table 8 the overall relevance of PG research on
plant sciences in UAS, Bangalore are, majority of (54.92%) of PG
research is not relevant and remaining 45.08 per cent of PG research
conducted in UAS, Bangalore is relevant. Department wise
relevance of PG research revealed that, nearly 50 per cent of the PG
research conducted in department of genetics and plant breeding
(48.28%) is relevant. More than 40 per cent of the PG research
conducted in the department of plant pathology (47.66%) and
agricultural microbiology (40.74%) is relevant. Little more than 35,

relevant.
Conclusion
‘The study shows comparatively very less proportion of studies were
‘observed in the category of “Food products” (5.56%) and “Soil
micro-organisms” (11.11%) in agricultural microbiology
department. Similarly in Genetics and Plant Breeding, genetic study
are not done, these research areas need to be explored in order to
better research actions, especially at University of Agricultural
Sciences, Raichur. In case of pathology, biotic pathogen related
research work need to be taken, similarly in case of seed technology,
molecular biology of seeds needs to be made as itis very essential for
production process. However, about 57% of PG research is not
relevant for their studies, these kind of time and knowledge canbe
best utilised topics among student community for better researh
initially for younger generation.
It is also felt that the contributions by the Post Graduse
researchers are not being utilized properly resulting in duplication of
the work by research scientists. It is also observed that the work
carried out in Post Graduate Research is not meeting the
farmers directly or indirectly which will result in wast
resources.
