What is the contemporary art in the Philippines?

The art of the Philippines can refer to the visual arts, performing arts, textile
art traditions, literature, dance, pottery, and other art forms in the country.
Graeme Sullivan (2002) stated “The various conditions that shape how
student learn art are similar to the way different personal, social, and cultural factors
influence contemporary art practice”.
To understand art history and how contemporary art develop. Let’s learn the
important happenings during the rise of contemporary art.
Below is the timeline of Philippine Arts highlighting the focus of arts of each
Era.
Philippine Art History
Pre-Colonial Arts/Ethnic Arts 900- 1521
Our indigenous ancestors in the pre-colonial period inhabited the Philippines
before the coming of our first colonizers. Arts in this period were for ritual purposes
or everyday use only. Music practically for all occasions, for every phase of life, from
birth to death. Even before the colonizers came, our ancestors had a very rich and
colorful culture. Filipinos had the first dwelt in caves and has learned the art of

12 (DO_Q3_CPAR_GRADE12_LESSON3-4)
architecture as they move and hunt for food. Sculpture, paintings and pottery were
the widely known forms of visual art.
Dance is a celebration of event. The dance gesture imitates animal
movements and tells a story. Songs characterized based on oral tradition. While the
pre-colonial literary period pieces transferred in narrative and speeches crude on
ideology and phraseology.
Islamic Era 13AD
Islamic art covers a range of artistic fields including architecture, calligraphy,
painting, glass, ceramics, and textiles. Islamic art in the Philippines have two artistic
styles. One is curved-line woodcarving and metalworking called okir.
The history of the Philippine Muslims is part of the backbone of the historical
development of the country. Filipino historians like Dr. Renato Constantino asserted
that no Philippine history can be complete without a study of Muslim development
(1990:29).
Some Muslim believe that only vocal music is permissible (halal) and that
instruments are forbidden (haram), but other Muslims contend that instruments are
lawful.
Dance Singkil takes its name from the bells worn on the ankles of the Muslim
princes. Perhaps one of the oldest of truly Filipino dances, the “Singkil” recounts the
epic legend of the “Darangan”of the Maranao people of Mindanao .
Spanish Era 1521-1898
Spanish colonial Art Period started when Philippines was colonized by
Spaniards. They introduced formal paintings, sculpture and architecture influenced
with Byzantine, Gothic, Baroque and Rococo art style. When the Spaniards arrived
in the Philippines in 1521, the colonizers used art as a tool to propagate the Catholic
faith through beautiful images. In the middle of the 17th century, many natives begun
to produce poems, paintings and musical compositions which echoed Western
artistic styles.
Marcelo Adonay known as “Palestrina” of the Philippines”, is regarded as an
icon of the golden age of church music in the country and the top representative of
church-trained musicians of the Spanish period.
The Spanish Friars introduced Western paintings to the artisans who learned
to copy two dimensional forms from religious paintings such religious icons were
painting of saints and of the holy family included the passion of Christ, and the
portrayal of purgatory, Heaven or Hell.
The existing literature of the Philippine ethnic groups at the time of the
conquest and conversion into Christianity was mainly oral, consisting of epics,
legends, songs, riddles and proverbs. The Spanish colonial strategy was to
undermine the native oral tradition by substituting for it the story of the Passion of
the Christ.
Dances such as the Fandango, Lanceros, Rigodon, Carinosa and Curacha
were introduced by the Spaniards. The folk dances of today were adaptations of the
old native dances.

13 (DO_Q3_CPAR_GRADE12_LESSON3-4)
IV. American Era 1899-1940
With the arrival of the new colonial power came a shift in art patronage-from
native ilustrados to the Americans. The new patrons, including the tourists and
foreign investors, favored landscapes, still life and genre themes that show the beauty
of the land and its people. Portraits were still favored by the public officials, usually
depicting them in dignified poses. There from the American colonization brought high
influence to the major Filipino art forms: paintings, sculptures and architectures.
American lifestyle and pop culture gave rise to music created by Filipinos
using western pop forms. Referred to us as Pinoy pop, it includes a wide range of
forms: folk songs, dance tunes, ballads, Broadway type songs, rock ‘n’ roll, disco,
jazz, and rap.
During the colonization of America, the dance has created a great impact to
us. American rhythm is frenzy and cheerful. One of the dances is the Boogie-Woogie.
Disco dancing is widely known to us. It is a free for all dance disco.
Philippine literature during the American rule was influenced by two factors
first of which is education. The literary genres that flourished during the American
period were poetry, sarswela, short story, and the novel. Short stories in English of
early Filipino fictionist are marked with American style.
V. Japanese Era 1941-1945
Visual at the time of Japanese era, instead of showing American films became
a venue for stage shows wherein English plays are translated into Tagalog.
Performing Arts in Japanese Era includes music and drama. Paintings are
used for propaganda, leaflets, flyers and posters graphically designed propaganda
slogans which contains imposition of Nihonggo warding off American influence.
These artworks were dropped from Japanese plains all over Manila.
Arturo Luz and Eduardo Castrillo created large scale outdoor sculptures
wherein they produced minimalist and geometric sculptures and manifested the
absence of peace and presence of chaos as evident in the distorted and emotional
figures.
VI. Modern Era 1946-1969
According to Stancheva (2017), the history of modern Philippine art is marked
by the conflict between rules and views of the academy and the innovative methods
of the modernist.
In the early 16th century, the Spaniards did so with the primary intention of
spreading the Catholic faith. As a result, religious art and the creation of were
strongly encouraged.
By the late 19th century Neo-Classicism and Realism became the norm. A
turning point was the emergence of the 13 Modernists” group which included artists
who had received their education abroad where they had come in contact with
various new and experimental styles. Five representative pieces of the 20th century
art of the Philippines, a period rule and the arrival of the Americans and on cultural
level witnessed intense artistic exchanges with the West.

14 (DO_Q3_CPAR_GRADE12_LESSON3-4)
“Las Damas Romanas” painted by Juan Luna in the style of Neo-Classicism.
The art of Fabian de la Rosa is considered to reflect the transition from Spanish rule
to American occupation. “Planting Rice” by Fernando Amorsolo. The art of the period
focused on traditional folk scenes as an embodiment of the imagined sense of
nationhood. History names Victorio Edades as “the father” of Modern Philippine art.
He argued that art can be more representation of reality as seen through the mind
and emotions of the artist.

VII. Contemporary Art 1970-present

Contemporary art is the art of today, produced by artists who are living in the
21st century. As such it reflects the complex issues that shape our diverse, global
and rapidly changing world. Through their work, many contemporary artists explore
personal or cultural identity, offer critiques of social and institutional structures, or
even attempt to redefine art itself.
A research article entitled A Synthesis overview of the Contemporary art
Forms and Performance Practices in the Philippines, analyzed through synthesis
information known as explanatory synthesis through the use of eight criteria in
analyzing the review such as painting, and other visual arts, architecture, sculpture
and installation, literature, music, dance cinema and theater and performance.
According to the study, Philippine traditional art has always been an integral
part of daily life, as well as the dominant and alternative art forms.
According to Tabuena (2021), the importance of contemporary art endures not
only in its aesthetic representation but also in its functionality and its significance
to the society that credited it. As the dominant, alternative and traditional art forms
may be used in everyday private circumstance, it is encountered more closely and
possesses many senses concurrently.
Contemporary Philippine art encompasses a wide range of art forms and
constantly redefines and dismantles traditional categories of arts (Lico, et al.2018).

Choose a form (fiesta décor, culinary art, performing art etc.) describe and
explain its origins. Share your notes in class supplement with pictures.

Lesson Contemporary Art Forms Based on
5 the Elements and Principles
The components and concepts of art, such as line, form, color, and
texture, have long been the conceptual building blocks of art and design employed
by Western artists to convey thoughts and feelings in their work. Artists frequently
learn how to deal with elements such as balance, repetition, harmony, and
symmetry by applying principles such as balance, repetition, harmony, and
symmetry.

Directions: Give meaning of the following words below. Then, list word/s which are
opposite of each word. Write your answer/s on a separate sheet of paper.

a. appropriation d. hybridity
b. performance e. technology
c. space

In their endeavors to build meaning in today's environment, contemporary

artists regularly go beyond these elements and values in their work, employing new
ideas and approaches. Art's elements and concepts can be thought of as a script.
Artists employ phrases, pick, organize, and combine lines, forms, colors, and
textures in a variety of ways to communicate themselves and establish meaning in
the same manner that authors do. The elements and principles used by
contemporary artists are listed below.
Elements and Principles of Contemporary Arts
We live in a community where photos and objects are everywhere. We're
surrounded with cheap, or free, and disposable words, pictures, and objects
everywhere we go, from television to the Internet, from the store to the junkyard. It's
hardly surprising that today's artists incorporate this content into their work. The
first element and principle of contemporary art was born in this.
Appropriation. It is the process of making new content by taking from another
source pre-existing image - books on art history, ads, the media - and incorporating
or combining it with new ones. Appropriation is a three-dimensional variant of using
found objects in painting. To appropriate is to borrow. A found object is an actual
object - often a manufactured product of a common place nature - given a new
identity as an artwork or part of an art piece.
In other words, appropriation refers to existing art works which are
appropriated to produce another artwork. Usage of prints, images, and icons to
produce another art form. It may also combine past from the present which revives
interests to existing forms of art.

20 (DO_Q3_CPAR_GRADE12_LESSON5)
Performance. Another element of contemporary art which regularly increases
drama, often acting and development to extremes of expression and continuity that
are not allowed within the theater. It interprets various human activities such as
ordinary activities such as chores, routines, and rituals, to socially relevant themes
such as poverty, commercialism, and war.
Space. An art transforming space, for example the flash mobs, and art
installations in malls and parks. It also refers to the distances or areas surrounding,
within, and within the components of an item. Space can be either positive or
negative, open, or closed, shallow, or deep, and two-or three-dimensional. Often
space is not clearly shown in a piece, but it is an illusion. It is considered as the
breath of art. Space is found in almost every piece of art that has been made.
Hybridity. Another element and principle used by contemporary artist in their
artworks. It is a usage of unconventional materials, mixing of unlikely materials to
produce and artwork. For example, coffee for painting, miniature sculptures from
pencils.
Technology art. The term in the contemporary practice which refers to the
use of mass production and the manipulation of the virtual world, its tools, and
programs. The use of technology in the creation and dissemination of art works. As
such, designers, and artists to produce commercial pieces or for more elaborate and
conceptual works implement many different computer programs, such as 3D
modeling, Illustrator, or Photoshop.

Directions: Answer the question below. Defend your answer. Write your answer on
a separate sheet of paper.

Is appropriation still acceptable? Do you think that the pre-existing artwork

used in appropriation is defaced or devalued?

geometric cut- outs, molding, cording or finger impressions, most of these
were made in Batangas

• At this ship, (a mixture of clay and water) rather than glazes is still used by
Filipino Potters to seal the pottery, and the pottery is open-fried.

• Pottery traditions continued to develop in certain locals, such as Burnay
