a/an, the and zero article (Ø)

• Use a or an + singular noun to talk about something for the first time.
I draw a giraffe and an elephant for my homework.

• Use the + noun when it is clear which thing or person you are talking about.
In my picture, the giraffe is standing next to the elephant.

• Use zero article (Ø) + plural noun when you are talking about things in general.
Giraffes are very tall. I love giraffes.

• We use could / couldn’t + the base form of a verb to talk about ability in the past.
