Semantic Triangles:

They developed a model called "The Triangle of Meaning" to better understand how language

works, and it is a sign theory. The triangle represents the word's relationship to thoughts and things.

The Semantic Triangle shows the direct relationship between Words & Thoughts and Thoughts &

Things.

Elements:

1) Referent: the externally perceived objects that are responsible for the impressions stored in the

thought area It refers to any aspect of the outside world in a broader sense.

2) Reference: The realm of memory in which recollection of past experiences and contexts occurs.

This is also where the response is chosen and expressed symbolically.

3) Symbol: It is the referent's mental processes that summon the referent via the word.

Referent: Black Symbol: Night

• Here the referent is Blank which symbolizes Night.


• Night recollects the memory of something dark from the past experiences that occurred.
