CBCT in Orthodontics
Cone beam computed Tomography •

Is method of cross section imaging of

teeth and tooth structure using x _ray
radiation and provides 3D view of the
structure oral cavity
Filed of view ( FOV )
refer to anatomical area that will be included in the •
data volume or the area of the patient that will be
irradiated fov .

Classified as small or limited, medium and large

Field of view

5cm 5-11cm 11-20

CBCT in orthodontics

- complete hard tissue examination and record , type of dentition
present ,Arch size and arch shape, asymmetry of arch

- anteroposterior and transverse maxillomandibular relationship

- number of sizes teeth , shape of teeth

Advantages Disadvantages
. Rapid scan time . Scatter
. Beam limitation . Motion artifacts due to increased scan time
. Image accuracy .poor contrast resolutions ,thus soft tissue
.Reduction in patient radiation dose can’t be reviewed
when compared to medical CT

. Economical comfortable and safe

Errors and Artefacts in cone_beam computed Tomography
1_ image artifacts can be inherently related to the CBCT machine defect

2_patient related artifacts : motion artifacts _due to :

A. Lack of patient cooperative, involuntary patient movements or when X-ray tube or image detector
collide with patients bulky shoulders or back

B. Long scan time result in blurred image and can be controlled by using a head restraint device and
selecting a protocol with a short scan time for patient at risk for excessive motion

3- Artifacts are produced by metallic object such as metal dental restoration, endodontic materials,
fixed prosthetic appliances, orthodontics appliances, orthodontic mini implant, dental implant, mini
plates used in maxillofacial surgery are the main causes of beam hardening . Beam hardening artifacts
reduce the image quality in the axial plane . it presents as white and black lines and may be “ sun ray “
in appearance.

4- laser print- out can be damaged duce to , for example high temperatures and light .
How to reduce errors
1 . Machine choice •
2 . Use only when induced
3 . FOV
4 . Patient instructions and
stabilization
5 . Machine calibration
