I. INTRODUCTION
Any liquid's surface shows a unique characteristic known as surface tension. any liquid
surface's propensity to shrink when at rest. It shrinks and acquires the structure of the liquid's surface
with the smallest possible surface area. Surface tension has a significant role in everyday life as well.
The forces of attraction between the particles in the supplied liquid as well as the forces of attraction
of the solid, liquid, or gas in contact with it affect surface tension. The effort or energy necessary to
remove the surface layer of molecules in a unit area can be conceived of as being roughly equivalent
to the energy responsible for the phenomenon of surface tension.
Simply put, surface tension is the tendency of molecules of a liquid to be attracted more
towards one another at the surface of a liquid than to the air above it.
II. OBJECTIVE
In doing this experiment, the student aimed to:
1. To determine the surface tension of water.
2. To determine the surface tension of coconut oil, honey and alcohol.
3. To provide evidence for a cause and effect relationship between the materials we used.
III. METHODOLOGY
A. Materials
Styro cup
Alcohol
Facemask
Honey
Water
Coconut oil
Graduated cylinder
8 peso coins
Test tube
Matchsticks
Glass dropper
Bunsen burner
Beaker
Pippete/dropper
Laboratory tripod
Laboratory gauze
Mercury lab thermometer
B. Methods
1. The researchers put their lab coats and other protective accessories as fundamental
laboratory safety precautions.
2. All the lab equipment and materials subjected to experimentation was orderly
arranged in a clean table.
3. Water was measured first in a graduated cylinder. It must be 10 ml and it was set
aside.
4. We also put the coconut oil, honey and alcohol in the graduated cylinder of 10ml as
well.
5. Then we used a pipette to count how many drops can be made in a pound of water,
isopropyl alcohol, coconut oil, and honey.
6. After we got the number of elements, we put the water, honey, coconut oil, and
alcohol in the beaker to the tripod lab then we lit the Bunsen burner.
7. Then when it is starting to boil we put the mercury lab thermometer and then we
turned off the Bunsen burner when it reached 70 degrees.
8. Then we took the beaker with the tongs.
9. The last procedure is we used a pipette to count how many drops we could make in
the peso.
DISCUSSIONS:
For the experiment of the surface tension of the water, it was seen that the surface tension of the
heated was higher because the hot water drops faster than the warm water. Next is we put the beaker
with alcohol to the tripod lab then it took longer to spill, but when we tried to boil the alcohol, we
realized that the alcohol spilled from the peso faster. Also, we tried to put the honey on tripod lab then
when it is starting to boil we put the mercury lab thermometer and then we turned off the Bunsen
burner when it reached 70 degrees so the first trial result was lower than the first trial with heated
honey then in the 2nd trial with honey the result was higher than the 2nd trial with hot honey. And
lastly, when the coconut oil boiled into 70 degrees the result of first trial without heated was higher
than the heated coconut oil so when we tried the first trial without heated the result became lower than
the second trial.
V. CONCLUSION
The surface tension depends on the force of attraction between the molecules of the fluid, the
stronger the force of attraction, the greater value of the surface tension. Also, temperature has
an effect on surface tension and it is inversely proportional.
VI. APPENDICES WITH CAPTIONS
After we put the warm water in the test tube with 10ml and I took a dropper to test the peso to see
how many numbers I can get in the first trial. I also tried to get how many numbers I could get in the
first trial without heated.
