SEQUENCE MARKERS
Definitions:
Sequence means that time has passed. Past, present, and future.
A marker is where you are focusing your attention in that period of time. Markers are words
that link sentences together. They help your paragraph move forward from the past to the
future.

Example:
when you take a shower you have to do things in order:
Step 1) You take off your clothes.
Step 2) You step into the shower.
Step 3) You turn on the water and step under it.
Step 4) You stand under the water and clean your body and hair with soap and shampoo.
Step 5) You turn off the water, step out of the shower, and dry yourself off with a towel.
A sequence marker connects each step...1 through 5.

Step 1) FIRST you take off your clothes.

Step 2) THEN you step into the shower.
Step 3) NEXT, you turn on the water and step under it.
Step 4) WHILE, you are standing under the water you clean your body and hair with soap
and shampoo.
Step 5) AFTERWARDS, you turn off the water, step out of the shower, and dry yourself off
with a towel.

EXAMPLES OF SOME OF THE SEQUENCE MARKERS:

FIRST THEN AFTER THAT NEXT

FINALLY BEFORE WHILE AFTERWARDS

Conclusion
When the sentences are written into a paragraph they look like this:
First I took off my clothes. Then I stepped into the shower. Next, I turned on the water and
stepped under it. While I was standing under the water I cleaned my body and hair with soap
and shampoo. Afterwards, I turned off the water, stepped out of the shower, and dried myself
off with a towel.
