Chapter 2

METHODS

This chapter presents the research design, research

environment, research respondents, research instrument,

ethics and data gathering procedure, and data analysis.

Research Design

This study utilized a quantitative, descriptive

research design. This design was deemed appropriate since it

described the interplay of the variables as used in the

study. Specifically, this was used in assessing the student-

respondents writing anxiety in English (L2) using the Second

Language Writing anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) and students

reflective writing output.

Research Environment

The study was conducted among the secondary schools

under the Malimono District namely; Malimono National High

School, Bunyasan National School, Masgad National High

School, Cantapoy National High School and Pili National High

School. These schools offer Junior High School and Senior

High School in which the former are the subjects of the

study. Presented in Plate 1 is the map of the Municipality

of Malimono which depicts the research locale.

writing activities specifically a reflective writing task to

gauge the respondents second language writing competence

level.

Validity. The main instrument on the Second Language

Writing Anxiety Inventory was spared from validation since

it is an adopted instrument hence, has already undergone

validation from experts.

Reliability. Trial run was administered to the non-

respondents to test the reliability of the instrument used

in checking the writing output of the respondents. Result in

the run-rerun for writing performance was highly reliable,

(Appendix E) hence worthy to be administered to the target

respondents.

Ethics and Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher surfed from the internet to access the

copy of the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory Tool

and the rubric that was used in assessing the written output

of the students. The said questionnaire and rubric were

downloaded and printed. The questionnaire was spared from

validation as it is an adopted questionnaire. Rubric became

instrument in rating the reflective writing output of the

students with the English teachers and the

researcher himself as raters.

A letter of request was sent to the Division Chair of

the Graduate School (Appendix B) for the conduct of the said

research study. Another letter of request was sent to the

Office of the Schools Division Superintendent of the

Department of Education in the Province of Surigao del Norte

and to the district supervisor and respective principals of

the schools covered in the study.

Upon approval, the conduct of the SLWAI was carried out

to assess the respondents’ level of second language writing

anxiety and the reflective writing activity to determine the

writing performance of the Grade 10 students.

The questionnaires were then retrieved, collected then

tallied ready for analysis and interpretation. The written

outputs were rated by the respective English teachers and

the researcher to get the students rating.

Data Analysis

The data collected were analyzed and interpreted

utilizing the following statistical tools:

Mean and Standard Deviation. This tool was used to

answer Problem 1 on the extent of the second language

writing anxiety of the respondents based on the parameters.
