English conversation strategies

First you have to change something, when a person asks you: How are you? You can’t
respond: fine thank you and you? Because the person will think that it’s almost robotic
and their English isn’t good.

Impress them by:

 Using “big words”

 Using slang words

When native speakers hear something like that want to know what you think, get your
point of view, get really excited and had great conversations.

You can change fine thank and you? Using different phrases like:

I’m good. You?

Fine. You?

Non-natives speakers has to use phrases that a native speaker would use and then that’s
a clue to the native speaker that oh maybe is ready for a conversation beyond a Basic
English.

Strategies:

 Ask to other person a question

 Ask deep, open-ended questions
 Hey, did you see or hey did you hear about (something)
 Compliment the other person(s)
 Don’t be afraid to open up

Ask to other person a question: when you are learning another language you have to
tend to only input like somebody else is asking you a question and then you forget
yourself to ask the other person a question.

Don’t wait to ask a question: you can ask question without wait to somebody ask it to
you. Always ask questions so you know again you forget it’s really easy.
Ask to deep, open-ended question: if you ask a yes or no question, you can’t just say
you know it just dead ends you just can say yes or no.

Example:

 Do you like cheese? Yes/no

Always ask deep open-ended questions so like you may you just said don’t ask yes or
no question because yes or no ends with the yes or the no.

Hey did you see/hear about (something)?

“Bla bla bla” could be:

 Something in the news

 Something funny you
 Saw on the internet
 Something that you heard from a friend

Compliment the other person(s): you use it when you see fit. This can be a nice strategy
just to show that you’re enjoying the other’s person company. It can be as simple as:

 Oh I like your shirt today

 Oh that’s a nice dress you’re wearing today
 Oh did you get a new haircut?
 That looks good on you!

Something likes that so this is a nice way to make the other person maybe want to spend
more time with you.

A good conversation starter sometimes if you’ve got to be careful with a stranger, it can
be creepy it can be a little uncomfortable what you complimenting right but if it’s
something like if they have a t-shirt and it’s a band that you both like that’s a great
conversation starter.

A good conversation started:

 (If you share a common interest)

 Keep it honest

Don’t be afraid to open up: a lot of people will be kind of shy they won’t open up to
much again within your comfort zone. People return the favor because if you’re just
having small talk and you say the weather’s nice today, you can only go so far.
Open up: to share something about yourself.

Elements of Communication

As we already know, communication is a process by which information is exchanged

between individuals through a common system of signs or behavior. The
Communication requires two or more persons interacting, understanding, and sharing
their ideas, you can also communicate by sending messages. In order for the
communication to occur we need some essential elements such as: verbal messages,
nonverbal messages, perception, channel, feedback, and context.

Verbal Messages

The term verbal communication often evokes the idea of spoken communication, but
written communication is also part of verbal communication, it also involves the order
of the words in a sentence.

Nonverbal Messages

Nonverbal communication refers to gestures, appearance, facial expressions, tone of

voice, eye contact, body language, posture, and other ways people can communicate
without using language.
Perception

Perception is the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory

information in order to represent and understand the presented information or
environment through your five senses which are: Taste, touch, hearing, sight, and smell.

Channel

Communication channels are the means through which people in an organization

communicate. Thought must be given to what channels are used to complete various
tasks, because using an inappropriate channel for a task or interaction can lead to
negative consequences. Complex messages require richer channels of communication
that facilitate interaction to ensure clarity; they include face-to-face communication,
broadcast media, mobile channels, electronic communication, and written
communication.

Feedback

Feedback is an important complement and one of the most important factors in the
process of communication; it is defined as the response given by the receiver to the
sender. The sender needs response of the receiver in order to decide effectiveness of
communication. The feedback can be negative or positive. Positive Feedback
indicates that the sender can continue his communication in the same manner as
before. Negative feedback on the other hand, indicates a need for a change in the
manner of communication.

Context
Context provides the background that helps reveal the message’s real meaning. Setting
is the first part of context. It involves time, place, and occasion.

Think about it (page 38)

1. What are the six essential elements of communication?

The six essential elements of Communication are: Verbal messages,
non-verbal messages, perception, Channel, feedback, context.

2. Give an example of each of the categories of nonverbal

communication.
Categories of Non-verbal Communication:

Appearance: The way someone looks like.

Facial Expression and Eye Contact: with facial expressions and eye contact you
can tell whether a person is sad, angry, or happy.

Posture: Crossing arms across the chest is a classic gesture of defensiveness.

Gestures: Waving, saluting, handshakes, pointing, or a thumb up.

Voice: For example, if your child smiles at you, smile back. If he's sad, nod your
head and look a bit sad yourself. Use a pleasant tone of voice and a relaxed body
posture and facial expression when you talk with your child.

Space: If you talk to the screen behind you while displaying a PowerPoint
presentation, the audience may perceive that you are not paying attention to
them.
Time and Place: When you give a presentation, does your audience have to
wait for you? Time is a relevant factor of the communication process in your
speech.

3. How does noise in the channel affect communication?

Noise is an unwanted signal which interferes with the original message

signal and corrupts the parameters of the message signal. This alteration
in the communication process, leads to the message getting altered. It is
most likely to be entered at the channel or the receiver.

4. Why is feedback important in communication?

The sender needs response of the receiver in order to decide

effectiveness of communication. The feedback can be negative or
positive. Positive Feedback indicates that the sender can continue his
communication in the same manner as before.
