Torque Measurement usingStrain

Gauges
Aim
To understand workingprinciple
and measure thetorqueusingstrain
gauges.

Theory
The measurement of is
torque importantina varietyofapplications,including sizingofload-
carrying shafts. This measurement isalsoa
crucialaspect ofthe measurement ofshaft power,
such as in an engine
dynamometer. Strain-gauge-based torque cells are constructed in a
manner similar-toloadcells,in which a torsionalstraininan elasticelement issensed
by
Straingauges appropriately placed on the elastic element. Figure 1show a circular shaft
instrumented with strain for the purpose of measuring torque, and a

commerc1allyavailable torque sensor.Consider the stresses created in a shaft ofradiusRo
subject tO a torqueT. The maximum
shearingstressina circularshaft occurs on thesurtace
