1. You don’t mention a communication context at all, but I do like how you explained how
the online gaming community works. You do quote reddit posts, so I would suggest
picking a subreddit related to gaming, like r/gaming or r/CallOfDuty, and studying that.
I’ve personally been a victim of some pretty severe toxicity while gaming, so your
research question is interesting to me. Dr. Dieterle did say that we can’t analyze hate
speech and online trash talk can sometimes toe the line, so make sure you’re careful
with examples you include!
2. You related Jenkins’s participatory culture to your explanation of the gaming community,
which I think is a good idea, and your in-text citation is correct! You also included another
reading which takes the stance of “trash talk is playful banter” which is an interesting
argument. You could make the claim that trash talk and banter can motivate somebody
to play better. I think you should explore that more.
3. You don’t really provide a justification for this research. I think you should ask yourself
“how does my research contribute to understanding of writing” and go from there.
Remember, you want to be able to make a case for how this research is important to the
entire writing community, not just the gaming community.
4. Just remember to specify a communication context in your final research proposal
essay.
5. I think you have a good foundation here. Just make sure to specify a communication
context when revising and talk about A. The communication that happens there and
what makes it effective in that context, and B. How that relates to your research question
and writing as a whole. Also, make sure to justify your research.
