AIM

The aim of these experiment is to use the acid base and solubility properties to
differenciate between alcohols and phenols

PRINCIPLE

When OH is attached to the aliphatic sp3 carbon the resulting compound is largely
neutral.
ACTION PLAN

CHEMICALS REQUIRED

 Water
 N butyl alcohol
 Dimethylethanol
 Chlorofoam
 Zinc chloride
 HCl

APPARTAUS

 6 test tubes

Steps followed

SOLUBILITY IN WATER

1. Place 2 ml of distilled water into 6 test tubes

2. Add 5 drops of 1 butanol alchol to testtube 1,5 drops of 2 butanol to testube
2,5 drops 1,1-dimethylethanol to testube 3 , 5 drops of glycerol to testube 4, 5
drops of phenol to testube 5, 5 drops of the unknown in testube 6
3. Stir each mixture tapping with a finger and holding the top of the tube
4. Note whether these substances are soluble in water or not.

SOLUBILITY IN CHLORO FOAM

Reapeat steps of solubility in water using 3 ml of chlorofoam instead of water

PROCEDURE

About 30ml of impure unknown liquid was transferd into a dry round bottom flask,
boiling stones were added for even boiling. The distillation apparatus were
assembled in such a way to perform siple distillation. The water flow in the
condenser was then initiated. The liquid in the round bottom flask(distillation flask)
was heated gently such that the distillate dropped of the condenser at a rate of one
to two drops per second. Temperature was recorded accodinly after every 2 ml od
distillate was collected until 30 ml of the distillate was collected.
