First Problem: It is Christmas! Jake is helping his sister Ashley to decorate the family room. The ceiling of
the family
room is 96 inches high.
1. Ashley bought a new Christmas tree, and it is 75 inches tall. The height of the old Christmas
tree is 68 inches. How much taller is the new Christmas tree?

2. The star at the top of the Christmas tree is 8 inches tall. What is the height of the new
Christmas tree after the star is put at the top?

Second Problem
Hint: 16 ounces = 2 cups = 1 pint
2 pints = 1 quart
4 quarts = 1 gallon

1. Before a party, Ashley bought a tray of 24 water bottles; each bottle has a capacity of 12 oz.
There are 30 guests. If each guest drinks 1 cup of water, is there enough water for all the
guests?

2. Josh mixed 2 cartons of orange juice, 3 bottles of soda water and 6 cans of cocktail fruits to
make a fruit punch for the Christmas party. Each carton of juice is 1 gallon and 3 quarts. Each
soda water bottle contains 6 quarts. The cans of cocktail fruit are 2 pints each. How much
(measured in gallons) of fruit
punch did Josh made?

3. Emily made a pot of cream of pumpkin soup for thanksgiving dinner. She put 5 cups of cream
in the soup. She poured the soup into 24 small soup bowls. How much cream (measured in oz) is
used for each small bowl of soup?

Third Problem
1. A package that is heavier than 11 lbs and 8 oz will have a label that says “heavy” on it. Gloria
packed 6 flowerpots to send to her customers. Each of the flowerpots weighs 1 lb and 12 oz. The
packing material weighs 5 oz. Will her package be labeled as “heavy”?

2. A packing box can hold up to 15 lbs. If Jack puts 9 lbs and 12 oz of clothes in the box, how
much more weight can the packing box hold?
