Greenville Forward Launches New Website: WhatifGreenville.com

What if Greenville had a place where great ideas could be collected and shared with people in Greenville capable of making them happen? It does now. Greenville Forward recently launched a new website designed to foster communication between Greenville citizens and community leaders called WhatifGreenville.com. What if Greenville is a collaborative project between Greenville Forward and OrangeCoat Web Design and employs a simple, idea-fostering framework that is user-friendly and consumer content generated. The site asks the question beginning with, What if Greenville in the hopes that users will finish the sentence with their ideas of ways to improve Greenville County, address a concern, and to foster community with other engaged citizens. Posts made to the website can also be broadcast via social network channels like Twitter and Facebook, and can are accessible on computers, smart phones, or tablet devices. The website tracks posts and refreshes every 20 seconds. Each month, Greenville Forward transmits popular ideas to a comprehensive and diverse list of local Champions, civic leaders, governments, community visionaries, and more, in the hopes that some can be implemented. In its first week, the site recorded 10,000 page views and 500 new ideas. With coverage on all of the major news networks, Greenville Forward has quickly seen that a voice is needed for the public. And now that voice is here.
Greenville Forward was created in January 2006 to help Greenville achieve Vision 2025, the bold, comprehensive, and aggressive plan to create a vibrant Greenville in the next twenty-five years. By having a group like Greenville Forward, whose sole purpose is to facilitate, coordinate, and communicate the ideas from Vision 2025, the aggressive goals for Vision 2025 will be kept vibrant, alive, and attainable.

How Music Can Save Your Life

By Matt Morgan, Owner/Producer Sit-N-Spin Recording Studios Are you asking yourself how can music possibly save your life? Well the truth is, I dont know. What I do know is that it has saved lives. There are countless stories of people all over the world showing us that music (as a thing) means so much to them, that its gotten them through perilous moments in their life. Others have shared stories of how playing musical instruments growing up has kept them from a darker path. The fact is that people who play musical instruments are less stressed, and it is proven that people that are less stressed live longer. Have I told you how music can save your life? Well, no, but go pick up a guitar and you might live longer! I have always played music. As far back as I can remember I have been able to make music with an instrument. My father was a musician, and it just came naturally. I have taught music since I was in high school when I was also attending the Fine Arts Center. It was at that point when music became my passion. I havent looked back. Im sure its no shock that I feel strongly about introducing music into everyones life - as early as possible. I also feel that music should be required in school, just like other languages. I teach classes at my studio www.sitnspinstudios.com for kids and adults on how to play, write, and record. I taught a summer program at the Fine Arts Center for 8 years and I still work with local schools. Its amazing to me when I think back on just how many students I have had over the years. Teaching private study as well as for programs, it was not uncommon for me to have had over 200 students a year. I get calls or emails all the time from parents or students bragging about being accepted into music schools like Berkeley, NYU, or NTS. They thank me, and sometimes tell me that I am the reason they got into music in the first place. That is an awesome feeling! I urge anyone to support local and national music programs like The Fine Arts Center, The Governors School, Save the Music Foundation, Support Music, or Music for all. Music is so important to me and to so many people that I know - I couldnt imagine my life without it. So go out and support live music, give to these foundations, buy a gift certificate for some private lessons or at my studio :), donate that saxophone collecting dust in your attic. Just do something to promote music. Youll feel better and, you never know, you just might save a life.

Genes Horizons - Musical Musings from G

ACOUSTIC SAHARA
One of contemporary world musics recent critical favorites Tinariwen sets aside their usual Algerian indi-rock electrified sonic palette to return to a more informal acoustic format. In the process nothing is lost of their power and much is gained in beauty of sound. The chiming acoustic guitars and percussion blend and entwine in partnership with voices. The songs are heavenly in melody and the texts translations in the booklet allow us into a magical and intense cultural world of desert existence in Algeria.

BEETHOVEN IN LONDON
This CD from Wigmore Hall Live is one of 3 volumes documenting the duo of violinist Alina Ibragomova and Pianist Cedric Tiberghien as they bless us collectors not lucky enough to attend their landmark concerts covering all 10 Beethoven Violin Sonatas. This is music by one of the undisputed master composers played like old souls by two rather youngish relative newcomers. From the powerful crescendos to the quiet intimate moments and the joyous playful passages these two deliver music captured in concert that stands up for, in fact demands, multiple listening. The sound of these live recordings is wonderful it only adds to what the awed audience at Wigmore Hall clearly is ecstatic about. Stunning!

TRUE SOUL FROM ARKANSAS
True Soul Deep Sounds From The Left Of Stax is a monumental CD-BOOK-DVD combo that brings the rarified soul and funk from the studio work of Lee Anthony out into the accessible world for all us non scholar collectors to enjoy. This is a loving tribute to the musical vision and legacy of a genius of soul who worked out his days in Little Rock Arkansas. From the opening moments of The Thrill Is Gone in an instrumental version replete with down low bass notes, sexy snaky rhythms, and sultry RnB lead guitar its apparent that this volume is aptly named and into something very serious. 18 tracks, 54 page full color hardbound booklet, extensive liner notes and a bonus DVD.

GOOD NEWS FROM TEXAS

At Last, something from Texas worth voting for! Jimmie Vaughan. His latest effort is Plays More Blues Ballads and Favorites dishes up 14 tracks of good and greasy gritty blues and soul done same way hes always done since his early days with The Fabulous Thunderbirds; no frills, for real authentic and drenched in soul. Guitar work that is simply wonderful, a groove that runs miles deep and guest vocal shots from the red hot siren of Austin Lou Ann Barton. It doesnt get any better than that when these two get together. Find out for yourself when they bring it all to The Handlebar here in Greenville October 7.

GREEN
THE VALUE OF A SNAPSHOT
By Allyson Hale
napshots may not provide full, all encompassing, pictures, but they will capture those distinct moments in life. Bruce Plourde, CityStory Co-Founder and photographic artist for Greenville Imprints of a City, uses a snapshot, style to not only blur the background, which enables a subject to stand out; No, Bruce removes all the surrounding context, making the subject the only possible focus. His digitally illustrated images are then printed onto aluminum, resulting in artwork that inspires a new perspective with new appreciations, new questions, and new stories. A collection of his recent snapshots of Greenville, can be found at The Gallery at Postcard from Paris (located within Linda McDougald Design Postcard from Paris Home) located at 633 S. Main Street. SNAPSHOTS OF GREENVILLE Greenville Imprints of a City, CityStorys newest Greenville gift, is a coffee table book unlike any other. The focus is Greenvilles modern narrative. Its not a history book nor a travel guide. Its a black, white, and metallic silver ink art book filled with snapshots of iconic images and community stories that produce a distinct, and mostly unknown, picture of Greenville. THE ART IN THE BOOK Bruce Plourdes numerous silver-toned snapshots of iconic Greenville structures adorn the pages and reveal a novel degree of beauty and depth. THE STORIES IN THE BOOK Insightful. Entertaining. Sustainable. And direct accounts from individuals leaving their imprint on Greenville. Corporations, education, nonprofits, parks, theatres, museums, and many more specific stories have been gathered and recorded so that the community may discover voices often missed among the noise.

Living the Full Life

By Lee Ann Carter People in the Upstate have nothing on that guy in the Dos Equis The Most Interesting Man in the World commercials. This article was suppose to be about two or three of the most fascinating people Ive met since moving here but after several false starts I realized the task was just too daunting, there was no way I could choose. So I scratched the entire thing and decided to focus instead on the WHY instead of the WHO. Living on a boat means a large percentage of your friends either live on, in, or near water and once the decision was made to relocate to Greenville I was concerned about adjusting to a new lifestyle without that one binding tie. Those fears turned out to be unwarranted as I continue meeting amazing people daily; people who Im in awe of due to their zest for life. Not to say that boaters dont enjoy or love life, we just, in my opinion, have a tendency to be a bit more laid-back than most. For example, if we want to spend the day reading, then thats pretty much all we dofor the entire day. Same with fishing or drinking or sailing. I wont say boaters are lazy; we just arent big multi-taskers. Here I have met people who have such a genuine love of life and want to pack as much into it as possible. These are individuals who not only take everything they can from life, but they also give back just as much, if not more. I have become friends with a couple young people, by young I mean in their teens, who because of their drive and motivation, have given me hope for our future. These teens are not only changing their community but our world with their vision for the future. The word no isnt in their vocabulary. I have met numerous people who are working diligently to make Greenville a world class city through events such as Google on Main, TEDxGreenville and Xperience Greenville. These are people who realize life doesnt stop at 5pm and spend the next 8 hours doing what inspires and excites them. After so many years of living a different lifestyle its very cathartic being surrounded by motivated dedicated people enjoying their life while also working to make a difference.

Way to go Greenville and keep it up!

A DOSE OF

Mark the Beetle (Part 2 of 3)

By Tim ONeill

F iction

Mark the Beetle was looking for answers. Trouble is, he didnt even know what the questions were. His conversation with Jerry the Butterfly had left him even more confused than ever, so he went to the source of wisdom in his world, Stephen the Spider. Stephen the Spider was wise. His multiple eyes allowed him to take in a lot of information and see everything from various points of view. He was generous with his wisdom. He would share his thoughts and ideas with anyone who asked. And even some who didnt. He wasnt one to mince words, though. He told it how it was. Or, rather, how he saw it, through his several points of view. He was one other thing as well: treacherous. For all his wisdom and generosity, a spider still had to eat. And Stephen the spider was well fed. Mark the Beetle travelled over to the web that Stephen the Spider had spun just the day before. Carefully watching his every step, Mark the Beetle called out to his friend, but got no response. Stephen the Spider often went from place to place spinning webs and sharing wisdom. But hed always return to his same haunts. So Mark the Beetle drank a refreshing dew drop, ate and edge of a particularly tasty green leaf, made himself comfortable and starting dozing in the afternoon sun. Hey! called Harry the Hummingbird. Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Mark the Beetle awoke with a start. His initial instinct was to run. But then he thought he should stay still and let the tree camouflage him from this birds gaze. Then he thought if this bird is calling to him, then he wasnt camouflaged very well. Finally he thought, why was this bird yelling at him, which inspired him to take voice. Danger be damned. Dude, why are you yelling at me? Mark the Beetle always used dude when talking to birds that might eat him. He figured one couldnt eat another that he was bros with.

24

Dude, really? Dude? OK. Dude it is. Harry the Hummingbird didnt stay in one spot for very long. He flew from place to place and only landed every once in a while. But for all of his scattered flying patterns, he kept a pretty steady stream of consciousness. Steady and fast, especially for someone who had just woken up. Look, kid, its no nectar off my beak-as they say. He flew up. But I wouldnt rest there if I were you. He flew to the side. Huh, if I were you? That would suck-nothing personal. I gotta be on the move. I gotta dodge. I gotta parry. I gotta thrust! He flew forward. You know what Im sayin. Totally random. Back on topic. Look this is a hotbed for bugs ergo a hotbed for bug eaters. Ergo-thats my hot word for the day. Im trying to use it wherever I can. Ergo I used it in that sentence. Ergo ergo ergo. You should try it, its a fun word to say. Harry the Hummingbird perched on a nearby branch. Look, dude! Mark the Beetle finally broke in. Im looking for Stephen the Spider. Have you seen him? Seen him? Harry the Hummingbird took flight once again. I ate him. Ate him whole. With some fava bean and a nice Chianti. Ha! See what I did there? Silence of the Lambs. Ever see it? He paused in mid-flight and looked directly at Mark the Beetle. It puts the lotion in the basket! he flew backward. Great flick! So, you seen it? You didnt see it? Not much for conversation are you kid? Or a sense of humor of course I didnt eat Stephen the Spider. Hes a friend of mind, ergo, I wouldnt eat him. Hes spinning a new web at the water spout. I go tell him youre looking for him. And with that, he was gone. Mark the Beetle didnt know if he should try to thank Harry the Hummingbird or throw himself into the Zapper. Harry the Hummingbird was right though. This wasnt a safe place to nap out in the open. So Mark the Beetle crawled back toward the tree and found a nice chip in the bark where he could rest, without being seen by hungry woodpeckers or chatty hummingbirds, and began wrestling with the reason for it all until sleep came upon him once more.

Greenville, SC Chicken Salad Review

Follow Chase Finch
I was a college sophomore at Clemson. Single and without the comfort of my freshman-year meal plan, and running low on cash for constant fast food, I recruited my roommate and took a trip to Ingles. We weren't comfortable planning meals from scratch, so we instinctively took a walk over to the deli area and found a smiling elderly Ingles deli cook passing out samples from a big tub of chicken salad (note that I'm not talking about a salad with chicken.) We left with a loaf of bread, cheddar cheese slices, and plenty of the aforementioned chicken salad, and so began a love affair with the food I know to consistently provide crunch, freshness, substance and flavor, whether for lunch or snack. Since then, chicken salad has become my go-to menu item of choice at new & favorite restaurants alike. I haven't tried all of the varieties available in Greenville's many fine restaurants, so let's call this my non-exhaustive Greenville Chicken Salad Review, in which I present experiences that I have enjoyed, and why.

Ingles

Yes, since my initial college trip, I've found that no one quite nails what I consider to be the standard chicken salad experience quite like Ingles. It's never dry, made with great white meat, and is good every time. It can be taken home and used for its versatility any time hunger strikes. They sell two varieties; I'm referring specifically to the rotisserie chicken salad, though the other has a more diverse ingredient set and is also a solid choice. They serve a chicken salad club, which is a hot sandwich with consistently good bacon and cheese on a well-paired bread roll. The key here is the grapes that are subtly mixed in nice touch, folks.

Coffee Underground Rainer's

True to the rest of their unique menu, their chicken salad differs from the norm, in that it's light on mayo and heavy on spice. I've returned several times, and have yet to try a different main course. Rainer's is right across from Falls Park. Put it on a croissant roll with cheddar cheese. On Friday, it's only 4 bucks for the whole lunch

Soby's on the Side

plate. 'Nuff said.

Brew & Ewe

This hidden coffee shop apparently had a local chicken salad buzz long before I got there. Their offering is made with curry, and comes just as great as a wrap as it does a sandwich. I would guess this meal best followed by one of their lattes to avoid the after-lunch workday slump.

If you know of some great chicken salad masterpieces that I've omitted, I expect to hear about them. Happy dining.

Mad Likes: Picking Favorites

With the impressive quantity of sushi restaurants in Greenville, how can you pick a favorite? The choices always come down to location and what sushi roll you are craving. Whether its the Poseidon Roll at Tsunami, the Samurai at Murasaki, youre at one end of Main Street, or you were just at the Haywood Mall and Sushi Hanas early bird special is not for the faint at heart, the choice is made for you.
At the time of this article there are nearly 20 sushi restaurants within Greenvilles city limits.

Wikipedia Sakura and you are directed to Cherry Blossom and a long list of Japanese songs and musicians.

I have a favorite sushi restaurant in Greenville, Sakura.

They won me over with, of course, their Sweet Heart Roll. For those of you scared of fruit in your entre, this is not for you, unless you are willing to admit how wrong you are. Its not just the sushi. Take away the Sweet Heart and youre looking at nearly every sushi restaurant you know. Its the little things they have. The electronic covers of Michael Jackson playing in the background, the walls of tall living bamboo, and, the best part, the ornate and unique clay soy sauce dishes and saki bottles, all of it just makes you feel like youre somewhere different. A favorite kind of different.

Fresh salmon, mango, avocado wrapped with soybean paper in wasabi mayo sauce.

Best production Ive seen yet. Daniel Waldschmidt

Words cannot express how wonderful we thought the production of Metamorphoses was. We stayed after the show for the discussion with the actors and director and thoroughly enjoyed it. The entire experience was very enlightening. The director talked to the audience before the show and was very entertaining and insightful. Nobody in our group of five have ever been to a theater that does this. Now, the show was the best theater I have ever seen and I am no spring chicken. We are already planning our next trip to your theater. Thank you to everyone who put this together. What is Leadership, Anyway?

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be part of Clemsons Leadership Summit, where myself and 23 others spent a week focusing on leadership at many different levels. So now, when someone asks me what is leadership? I can look at them straight in the eye and give them a direct answer. Yeah. Right. See, the one thing I learned is that leadershiptrue leadershipis different for everybody. You will lead differently than I do. Some people have different focusesethics, emotional intelligence, strength and ego, to name a few. Heck, some people even lead by following. Dont believe me? Watch Derek Sivers How to Start a MovementTED video, where one crazy, half-naked guy at an outdoor event leads hundreds of others to act just as insanely. To me, to say that I can outright define leadershipwhat it means to me and what it should mean to youis ultimately impossible. What I did learn during the week came in waves of inspiration.Leaders must be ethical, or else they are no better than a playground bully. Leaders must inspire, and they must be followed, or else they arent really leaders at all. Leaders must serve the community around them, or else they sit apart from the people they lead. Leaders must listen and be available. Leadership is giving someone else the reigns, even if they do it differently than you do. Even if it may be wrong (by your or my standards). Leadership is realizing that when you put yourself on a shelf, a lot can happen without you. Leadership is a highly complex organism. Its something that may be definable in bookish standards, but not one that is easily described. You know it when you see it, and you know its lacking when its not there. Can it be created? I dont know. Leadership can be unearthed, uncovered, discovered, and encouraged, though. In Sivers video, he celebrates the followers as much as the leader. After all, the first follower, he says is a form of leader on his own. And without the followers, there would be no leader. Are you a leader? If so, whos following you, and where are you taking them?

CONNECT & PARTICIPATE

...or how do you get there from here?

Too many times we sit by and watch the world spin on without taking a single step that can actually make a difference in someones life. That passive approach really doesnt do you, or anybody else, any good in the long run. Funny thing participation in the midst of contributing your time, passion and efforts to good causes you will find yourself discovering this thing called enjoyment. We are by nature social creatures and the great surprise we continue to relearn is that most people appreciate a kind act being perpetrated in their presence. Enjoyment breeds happiness. Happiness increases your self-esteem and can lead to that most holy of selfs selflessness. Beware, happiness is not the end goal of our existence. Just like sadness, happiness is fleeting (or should be). No one wants to be around that silly happy all the time guy that paints rainbows by waving his hands in the air and conjures unicorns to ride through candyland. The realistic middle ground, the grail, the one answer is contentedness. So whilst in one of your daydreams today dismount Pegasus and imagine being able to put your hands, mind and heart to work helping someone else find the answer to it all. Or simply apply your talents towards easing someones pain or suffering there is enough to go around

Contentedness

Conquer Cancer
In October, cyclists, like Mark Harden, from Greenville will be cycling to Austin, TX, to raise money to conquer Cancer. Mark is part of the Palmetto Peloton Project (P3) which exists to promote the advancement of cancer research and advocacy efforts locally, regionally and nationally through fund-raising fitness events. Help Mark with this great cause by donating to his challenge at www.p3ride.org, and select Marks name from the pull down menu. All proceeds will go to the Institute For Translational Oncology Research and Clinical research Unit of the Greenville Hospital System and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
