Philosophy
By: Elli Laughlin
Teaching Philosophy
● Students should feel comfortable and curious in my classroom
● Success is success, no matter how small
● Progress, not perfection
● Recognizing not all students will be at the same level
● Be a mentor and a guide
● Encourage hands-on learning
● Learning environment should be calm and respectful
● Developing relationships with each student is very important to me
● Ensuring I am doing my best to benefit each child, both
academically and emotionally
Writing: Past Experiences
● Time-consuming
● Immense amount of pressure
● Subjective grading
● Exhausting
● Stressful
● Loved to read, but not always write
Questions
How can I ease the pressure of writing?

What can I do to encourage reading?

How can I assess writing and reading?

How can I promote reading and writing without forcing it?

Writing Philosophy
● Making time in the classroom for writing
● Main focus will be writing process
● Less pressure on final draft
● Allowing students to get feedback from peers and me
● Assessing progress, not finished product
● I am a guide; students are free to explore and write in
their own way
● Writing will be incorporated throughout the classroom
(exit tickets, bell ringers) and will be used across
subjects
Reading Philosophy
● Helping students find books and genres they enjoy
● Easing pressure of speed reading
● Focus on comprehension

that interests them
● I will guide students to find answers to their questions by
reading

analyzing a text
● Strengthen literacy skills like proper grammar,
sentence structure, vocabulary, and spelling
through reading and writing

during writing process

my classroom

prompt

Conclusion
● I want my students to improve their writing skills during the writing process,
with less emphasis on the final draft
● I want to help my students find a book they love so they will continue
reading beyond my classroom
● I will incorporate writing across the curriculum
● I will guide my students and show support in any way they need
● I will model behaviors I expect from them
● I will reflect on and adjust my teaching methods
● I will celebrate the tiny wins with my students
