The ethnic minorities in Yunnan such as the Yi, Bai, Naxi, Hani, Lisu, Lahu and Pumi
have a common festival – the Torch Festival. The Torch Festival of the Bai features
the largest number of participants, with bright burning flames and torches. The Torch
Festival is one of the grandest festivals of the Bai people.

Different ethnic minorities have diversified sayings on the origin of the festival. For
part of the Bai people, the festival commemorates a queen who died as a crusader of
justice and faithful love.
The Torch Festival, whose common origin was to eliminate insects, exocise evils and
pray for a good harvest, falls from the 24th to the 25th of the sixth lunar month.
During the festival, the Bai people host banquets with homemade liquors to celebrate
the festival and participate in various cultural and recreations with local features. At
night, the villagers, whether Bai or not, lights up a two-meter pine stick of 25
centimeters in diameter. And they will tour the villages or rally at the village squares
while holding the pine torches. Then, many Bai people in their ethnic costumes, play
the sanxian, a three-stringed musical instrument among the crowd. Some dance
gracefully while clapping their hands and spinning around a bonfire comprised of
their torches combined or around a giant burning torch extending about 15 meters
high into the sky and even turning the dark into bright. Others stroll in the forests and
on the farmland nearby the village, wielding smaller flaming torches to drive away
insects and evil spirits and pray for a good harvest. Sometimes, the whole celebration
can last until dawn.
